South Africa Work Visa Guide: Critical Skills vs General Work Visa

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. Verify important decisions with the CRA/IRS or a qualified professional (for health topics, a licensed healthcare provider). You use this information at your own risk.
The short answer

The two main work routes are the Critical Skills Work Visa (for occupations on the official Critical Skills List) and the General Work Visa (for other occupations, tied to a specific job offer). Both are issued for up to 5 years, both are applied for through VFS Global or a South African mission abroad, and both can lead to permanent residence after 5 years of continuous work. A third route, Intra-Company Transfer, covers secondments but offers no PR path.

Critical Skills Work Visa

  • Who: your occupation must appear on the latest Critical Skills List (ICT, engineering, health, sciences, finance, trades, academia).
  • No job offer strictly required to apply — but without one the visa is issued for 12 months, during which you must secure qualifying employment; with an offer, up to 5 years.
  • SAQA evaluation: all foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority — typically the longest lead item (often 12–18 weeks), so start first.
  • Professional body: written confirmation from the SAQA-recognised professional body/council for your occupation (e.g. ECSA for engineers), plus registration where the law requires it.
  • Points-based system: since the 2024 amendments, applicants must score 100 points and meet all prescribed requirements.
  • Other documents: police clearance from every country of 12+ months' residence in the last 5 years (under 6 months old), medical and radiological reports (under 6 months old), valid passport, proof of payment.

General Work Visa

  • Who: occupations not on the critical skills list.
  • Job offer mandatory, and the application is assessed under a points-based system. (The old requirement for a Department of Employment and Labour certificate proving no local candidate was available was waived from 8 October 2024.)
  • Otherwise the document pack is similar: SAQA evaluation, police/medical clearances, contract of employment.

Realistic timelines and costs

There is no single published global processing time. The longest delays are usually before submission: SAQA (12–18 weeks), professional body registration (4–12 weeks), police certificates (weeks). DHA/VFS adjudication is officially targeted in weeks but has historically stretched to months at busy missions — budget 4–10 months end-to-end and treat anything faster as a bonus. Total first-year costs (evaluations, registrations, medicals, VFS fees, flights for biometrics) commonly run into several thousand US dollars.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for permanent residence straight away?

Holders with 5 years' relevant experience and a permanent employment contract can in some cases apply for PR under Section 27(b) without waiting out the full visa — get immigration advice on your specific facts.

What if my SAQA evaluation is not ready yet?

DHA may issue the visa for one year on proof that you applied for SAQA evaluation, extended to the full term once the positive outcome arrives within that year.

Can I change employers on a work visa?

Work visas are generally tied to a specific employer/occupation — changing jobs usually requires a new application or amendment. Plan around this before resigning.

When should I renew?

At least 60 days before expiry, in person where required. Do not let a visa lapse while waiting — an expired visa means unlawful presence.
