The short answer
South Africa's study visa is relatively straightforward to get — full-time enrolment at a registered institution, proof of funds, medical cover, and you are in. The visa includes an automatic right to work up to 20 hours per week during term (full-time during vacations). But there is no automatic study-to-PR pipeline: the realistic route is study → qualifying job → 5 years on a work visa → PR, which typically takes 8–12 years from arrival.
Study visa essentials
Enrolment: full-time course at a registered South African university, college or school, with proof of acceptance.
Finances: proof you can cover tuition plus living costs for the year.
Medical cover: compulsory medical aid registered in South Africa (e.g. Momentum Ingwe Student or similar student plans).
Police clearance + medical reports as with other visas.
Work rights: 20 hours/week during term, full-time in vacations — no separate work permit needed. Your first formal job will also require a SARS tax number before payroll.
The bridge: from graduation to a work visa
Start the SAQA evaluation of your South African qualification in your final year — it still matters for work-visa applications (your degree must be recognised for the occupation).
If your occupation is on the Critical Skills List, the Critical Skills Work Visa is the best bridge: no job offer strictly required to apply, up to 5 years, and a direct PR route under Section 27(b) after 5 years of work.
If not on the list, the General Work Visa needs a job offer and points assessment — much harder without scarce skills.
Graduate job-hunting reality: employers must be willing to support your visa; large corporates and multinationals are far more set up for this than small firms.
PR after 5 years of work
Five years of continuous work on a qualifying work visa opens the PR application (Immigration Act Section 27(b) for work-based PR, or 26(b) for long-term residents in some readings). Citizenship by naturalisation then requires another 5 years as a permanent resident — roughly a decade from first arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stay and job-hunt after graduation?
There is no dedicated post-study work visa (unlike the UK or Canada). You may remain while your study visa is valid; many graduates renew or switch to a work visa as soon as they have an offer. Plan the switch well before the study visa expires.
Does part-time student work count toward the 5 years?
No — the 5-year clock for work-based PR starts with the qualifying work visa, not student work.
Is the 20-hour limit really enforced?
It is a legal condition of the visa. Breaches can jeopardise renewals and future applications. Full-time work is only allowed during official vacations.
Which degrees help most?
Those feeding Critical Skills List occupations: ICT/software, engineering, health sciences, data, accounting. Check the current list before choosing a programme.
