South Africa Visa Types Overview: Which Visa Fits Your Situation?

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. The short answer

South Africa has no single "expat visa" — instead, a set of visa categories under the Immigration Act, each tied to a purpose. Most applications are lodged through VFS Global centres (or South African missions abroad), and as a rule you must apply from outside South Africa; switching from a visitor's visa to another category inside the country is generally not allowed. Many Western passports get 90 days visa-free entry for tourism.

The main routes

  • Visitor's visa (Section 11): tourism and short visits. Many nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days. The remote work visa sits under this section (see below).
  • Remote work (digital nomad) visa: Section 11(1)(b)(iv) visitor's visa for people employed by a foreign employer. Requires gross income of at least R650,796 per year (per the DHA requirements sheet of 9 October 2024), proven by 3 months of bank statements. Valid up to 3 years; no work for South African employers allowed; must be applied for from outside the country.
  • Study visa: for full-time enrolment at a registered institution. Includes an automatic right to work up to 20 hours/week during term (full-time in vacations).
  • Work visas: General Work Visa (needs a job offer + a points-based assessment; the Department of Employment and Labour certificate requirement was waived from 8 October 2024), Critical Skills Work Visa (occupation must be on the Critical Skills List; SAQA-evaluated qualifications; up to 5 years), and Intra-Company Transfer (for secondments within multinationals, up to 4 years, no PR path).
  • Business visa: for investing in/starting a business — requires a minimum investment (historically around R5 million, with possible waivers) and a business plan; check current DHA requirements.
  • Retired person's visa: for those with passive income — a minimum of ZAR 37,000 per month from pension, annuity or investment income is commonly reported; issued for 4 years, renewable.
  • Relative's/spousal visa: for spouses, life partners and dependent family of citizens, residents or visa holders.

Practical rules that catch people out

  • Apply from outside. With narrow exceptions, you cannot change from a visitor's visa to a work or study visa while inside South Africa.
  • Renew 60+ days early. Extension applications should be lodged at least 60 days before expiry (7 working days if the visa was issued for under 30 days).
  • Police clearance: needed from every country where you lived 12+ months in the last 5 years, not older than 6 months at submission.
  • Medical + radiological reports on DHA forms, also not older than 6 months.

Frequently asked questions

How long do visas take?

It varies by mission and season — from a few weeks to several months. Start early; police clearances and SAQA evaluations have their own multi-week lead times.

Can my family come with me?

Spouses/life partners and minor children generally apply for accompanying visas linked to the main holder's visa.

Is there a path from these visas to permanent residence?

Work visas (critical skills, general) can lead to PR after 5 years of continuous work; the remote work visa and intra-company transfer generally do not.

Where do I actually apply?

Through VFS Global centres handling DHA applications, or the nearest South African embassy/consulate. DHA publishes per-visa checklists — download the current one before you start.
