The short answer
This 10-day route hits Spain's four essential cities in a single logical arc: royal Madrid, Moorish Seville, Granada's Alhambra, and Gaudí's Barcelona. Córdoba slots naturally between Seville and Granada. Trains connect everything; no domestic flights needed.
Day 1 — Arrive in Madrid
Land at Madrid-Barajas (MAD) and take the metro or Cercanías train to the center. Stroll the Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor, and Mercado de San Miguel for a tapas dinner. Overnight Madrid.
Transport: Airport to center about 30–40 minutes by metro/train.
Day 2 — Madrid: The Art Triangle
Morning at the Prado Museum (€15; arrive at opening, 10:00). Lunch, then the Retiro Park for row boats and the Crystal Palace. Finish with the Palacio Real exterior and sunset from the Sabatini Gardens. Overnight Madrid.
Day 3 — Madrid: Old Town and Reina Sofía
Explore the Madrid de los Austrias quarter: Royal Palace, Plaza de la Villa, San Ginés churros. Afternoon at the Museo Reina Sofía for Picasso's Guernica. Evening flamenco show or tapas crawl in La Latina. Overnight Madrid.
Day 4 — Madrid → Seville by AVE
Morning high-speed train to Seville (about 2.5 hours). Afternoon: Seville Cathedral and the Giralda (€13 online). Evening in the Santa Cruz quarter and tapas along Calle Mateos Gago. Overnight Seville.
Transport: Madrid-Puerta de Atocha → Sevilla-Santa Justa, AVE about 2.5 hours.
Day 5 — Seville: Alcázar and Riverside
Morning at the Real Alcázar (€15.50; first slot of the day). Lunch, then Plaza de España and the María Luisa Park. Sunset at the Metropol Parasol viewpoint, dinner in Triana across the river. Overnight Seville.
Day 6 — Seville → Córdoba → Granada
Morning AVE to Córdoba (about 45 minutes). Visit the Mezquita-Catedral (€15), the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos gardens, and lunch in the Jewish Quarter. Afternoon train to Granada (about 1.5–2 hours). Evening tapas in the Albaicín. Overnight Granada.
Transport: Sevilla → Córdoba AVE about 45 min; Córdoba → Granada train about 1.5–2 hours.
Day 7 — Granada: The Alhambra
Full day at the Alhambra (€22.27; book the earliest Nasrid Palaces slot, 8:30). Allow 3–4 hours: palaces, Alcazaba, Generalife. Afternoon rest, then sunset at the Mirador de San Nicolás overlooking the Alhambra. Evening flamenco cave show in Sacromonte. Overnight Granada.
Day 8 — Granada → Barcelona
Morning free for the Royal Chapel or the Albaicín. Fly or train to Barcelona: the train takes about 5.5–6 hours (one change or direct), the flight about 1.5 hours plus airport time. Evening stroll on Las Ramblas and dinner in the Gothic Quarter. Overnight Barcelona.
Transport: Granada → Barcelona by train (about 5.5–6 h) or flight (about 1.5 h).
Day 9 — Barcelona: Gaudí Day
Morning at the Sagrada Família (€26; first slot, 9:00). Lunch, then Park Güell (€18; book an afternoon slot). Evening on Passeig de Gràcia (Casa Batlló exterior, Casa Milà) and dinner in Eixample. Overnight Barcelona.
Day 10 — Barcelona: Old Town and Departure
Morning in the Gothic Quarter and the Palau de la Música Catalana area, lunch at La Boqueria market. Afternoon at Barceloneta beach or the Picasso Museum. Fly home from Barcelona-El Prat (BCN).
Practical Tips
Tickets to book first: The Alhambra, Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Real Alcázar sell timed slots that vanish weeks ahead in peak season — book these the day your dates are fixed.
Train strategy: Book AVE trains on renfe.com as early as possible; the cheapest Promo fares sell out first. Madrid–Seville and Córdoba–Granada are the core legs; everything else is optional.
Pace note: This itinerary is full but not frantic — two nights each in Seville, Granada, and Barcelona gives each city room to breathe. If you'd rather slow down, drop Madrid to two days and skip the Royal Palace.
Best season: April–June and September–October. Avoid August in Seville and Córdoba (40°C+ heat), when many locals leave and the heat makes sightseeing miserable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do this route in 7 days?
Yes, but tightly: one day in Madrid, one in Seville, Córdoba as a half-day stop, one in Granada, two in Barcelona, plus travel days. You'd be seeing, not absorbing. Ten days is the comfortable minimum.
Is it better to start in Barcelona instead?
The route works in reverse equally well. Madrid-first flows better for most international arrivals, since Madrid-Barajas has more direct flights.
Do I need a car anywhere on this route?
No. Every leg is covered by train, and all four cities have good metro and bus networks. A car would only add parking headaches.
How much walking is involved?
A lot — 15,000+ steps daily is normal. The Alhambra, Park Güell, and Seville's old town are especially leg-heavy. Bring broken-in shoes.
