Opening a Bank Account in Spain: NIE, Banks, and Free Alternatives

The short answer

A Spanish bank account makes life dramatically easier — rent, utilities, and phone contracts all assume you have one. The main hurdle is documentation: most traditional banks want a NIE or TIE, while non-resident accounts and digital alternatives accept a passport.

The NIE question

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your foreigner ID number. You do not need to be a resident to get one — a "non-resident NIE" (NIE blanco) is issued for economic activity like buying property or paying taxes. Apply at a Spanish consulate abroad or at the Oficina de Extranjería / police station in Spain (form EX-15, fee paid via modelo 790).

  • Residents usually hold a TIE (the physical card with your NIE on it).
  • EU citizens get the NIE via the green EU registration certificate (CUE).
  • For banking, most branches accept: DNI, TIE, or passport — but online-only onboarding generally requires a DNI or TIE, so passport holders often have to visit a branch.

The big four, compared

  • BBVA — the most foreigner-friendly onboarding. The Cuenta Online sin Comisiones (0% TIN, 0% TAE) has no maintenance fees for new customers; you can start online with a DNI/TIE and finish in one of 1,800+ branches. Passport-only applications must be done in branch.
  • Santander — offers a non-resident online account openable with just a passport via video identification. Its Cuenta Online sin Comisiones is also fee-free. Strong branch network for in-person help.
  • CaixaBank — Spain's largest branch network, good if you want a human nearby. Its flagship Cuenta Día is positioned as fee-free, but check the conditions attached at signup — CaixaBank has a reputation for adding fee conditions later.
  • Banco Sabadell — historically strong with international clients (especially in Catalonia and expat areas). Compare its current fee-free online account terms, which change periodically.

Practical tip: open the account in branch for your first one, even if you qualify online. Branch staff handle the NIE/passport edge cases daily, and you walk out with the account working.

Fee-free digital alternatives

If you cannot or do not want to deal with a traditional bank yet:

  • N26 — German IBAN, full EU banking license, onboarding with passport + video selfie. Free tier covers the basics; good as a bridge account.
  • Revolut — Lithuanian IBAN, fast onboarding, excellent FX rates. Fine for daily spending and transfers, but some landlords and utilities prefer a Spanish IBAN — check before relying on it for direct debits (domiciliaciones).
  • Wise — multi-currency account with local IBAN details in several currencies. Best for moving money between countries cheaply, less of a full daily bank.

All three are widely used by newcomers in Spain, and all work with just a passport.

Your right to a basic account

Under EU rules, anyone legally resident in the EU has the right to a basic payment account (cuenta de pago básica) — low-cost, with a debit card and transfers — and banks cannot refuse you for lacking a fixed address history. If a bank turns you away, ask for this explicitly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account before I have my NIE?

Yes — as a non-resident with a passport. Santander's non-resident online account is the smoothest route; in branch, BBVA also opens accounts with a passport. Switch to a resident account once you have your TIE.

Do Spanish banks charge monthly fees?

Many traditional accounts do (€5–€15/month at the big banks if you do not meet conditions like direct-depositing your salary; some regional banks charge more). The fee-free online accounts (BBVA, Santander) avoid this if you meet their stated conditions — read them before signing.

Will my foreign IBAN work for direct debits?

Legally, yes — IBAN discrimination is banned in the EU. In practice, some Spanish utilities and landlords still insist on a Spanish IBAN, so keep a local account for domiciliaciones.

How long does onboarding take?

Online with DNI/TIE: minutes to a day. In branch with a passport: usually same day, sometimes a few days for compliance checks on non-residents.

Is Bizum worth setting up?

Yes — Bizum is Spain's instant mobile payment system, built into every major bank's app. You'll use it for splitting bills, paying small businesses, and sometimes rent. It requires a Spanish mobile number.
