The short answer
The Beckham Law can save a high earner roughly €20,000 a year in Spanish tax — but on a modest salary it can quietly cost you money, and it comes with a family catch and a fiscal cliff at year six. It is worth it when three things are true: you qualify, your income is high enough that a flat 24% beats the progressive scale, and you file Modelo 149 within the six-month window.
How it works
The regime (Article 93 of Spain's income tax law, named for David Beckham's Real Madrid years) lets qualifying newcomers be taxed as if they were non-residents: a flat 24% on employment income up to €600,000 per year (47% above that), and zero Spanish tax on foreign-source income — dividends, rents, interest, capital gains earned abroad. Wealth tax exposure is limited to assets located in Spain. It lasts six tax years: the year you become a Spanish tax resident plus the following five. It is not renewable.
Who can qualify
You must move to Spain for a work-related reason and become a Spanish tax resident (usually 183+ days). You must not have been a Spanish tax resident in any of the five tax years before the move. Since the 2023 reform, remote employees of foreign companies on Spain's digital nomad visa can also qualify — confirmed by Spanish courts in 2025. The move has to precede the job chronologically: relocating for pleasure and finding work later doesn't count. Freelancers (autónomos) are generally excluded.
The hidden costs nobody puts in the brochure
You lose personal and family allowances. As a deemed non-resident you get no personal minimum, no family minimum, and no income-tested deductions — no rent deduction, no joint taxation with a spouse. On a salary around €40,000–€60,000, the ordinary progressive scale plus allowances can come out cheaper than the flat 24%.
Treaty treatment. You're taxed as a non-resident, so you generally can't invoke Spain's double-taxation treaties — fine for most, but it matters for US filers above roughly €300,000.
The family catch. Your spouse can join the regime only if they move with you (or within your first fiscal year), weren't Spanish tax residents in the previous five years, and meet the income rules themselves.
The deadline and the cliff
File Modelo 149 within six months of registering with Spanish Social Security (or starting work, whichever comes first). Miss it and you're out — there is no extension. When the six years end, you fall off a fiscal cliff: overnight you become a full Spanish resident taxed on worldwide income at progressive rates up to 45–54% combined, with full wealth-tax and transparency obligations.
Forum reality check: on expatforum.com, a recurring thread is newcomers asking whether they qualify — and the typical answer is that the paperwork order matters more than the salary math. Get the Modelo 149 in on time and keep the chronological proof (contract, tickets, registration) that the move was work-driven. (This is general information, not tax advice — run your own numbers with a qualified advisor.)
Frequently asked questions
On what salary does the Beckham Law start saving money?
Roughly above €65,000 per year the saving becomes substantial; on a €150,000 salary the flat 24% saves about €20,000 a year versus the ordinary scale. Below about €50,000, do the math carefully — the lost allowances can erase the gain.
Can I apply if I was a student in Spain a few years ago?
Maybe not. The five-year rule is checked year by year — a 12-month stay with more than 183 days of presence can have generated tax residence for that year, even if you never declared it.
Does it work for company directors or startup founders?
Directors of Spanish companies can qualify; entrepreneurs need an ENISA-favorable-report innovative activity, and highly qualified professionals in startups or R&D qualify if employment income exceeds 40% of their total income.
Can I leave the regime early?
Yes — renunciation is communicated between 1 November and 31 December of the year before you want to stop. But there's no way back in once you leave.
What happens at year seven?
You file the ordinary Modelo 100, pay progressive rates on worldwide income, and your full global wealth enters the wealth-tax base. Plan for the cliff from year one.
