La réponse courte

December 31 is the real tax deadline most newcomers miss — not April 30. Contribution room for 2026 must be used (or at least planned) before the calendar flips. Here is your checklist with verified 2026 numbers.

1. TFSA — deadline December 31, 2026

  • 2026 annual limit: $7,000. Lifetime cumulative maximum (18+ and resident since 2009, never contributed): $109,000.
  • Room is calendar-year based: contribute by December 31, 2026, no extensions. Unused room carries forward; withdrawals re-add room the next January 1.
  • Newcomer trap: you only accrue room for years you were a Canadian tax resident after turning 18. Landed in 2026? Your room is $7,000, not $109,000.
  • Non-residents: you may hold a TFSA, but no room accrues for full years of non-residency, and contributing while non-resident is taxed at 1% per month.
  • Over-contributions are penalized at 1% per month — check your CRA My Account before topping up.

2. RRSP — deadline March 1, 2027

  • 2026 limit: 18% of 2025 earned income, capped at $33,810 (minus pension adjustment, plus unused room).
  • Contributions made in the first 60 days of 2027 count for 2026 — the deadline is Monday, March 1, 2027.
  • A $2,000 lifetime over-contribution buffer exists; beyond that, 1% per month.

3. FHSA — deadline December 31, 2026 (no extension)

  • $8,000 new room per year, $40,000 lifetime cap — unchanged for 2026. Unused room carries forward but maxes at $16,000 in a single year.
  • Unlike the RRSP, there is no 60-day extension: contributions for the 2026 deduction must land by December 31, 2026.
  • Room starts accruing only in the year you open the account — open one before year-end even if you contribute later.

4. Capital gains: still 50%

The proposed increase to a two-thirds inclusion rate was cancelled outright and never became law. For 2026, the inclusion rate stays at one-half for individuals. If you deferred asset sales waiting for clarity, the answer is now settled.

5. Before December 31: quick actions

  • [ ] Check TFSA/RRSP room in CRA My Account (note: CRA data can lag — cross-check your own records)
  • [ ] Top up TFSA to use 2026 room
  • [ ] Open an FHSA if you plan to buy a first home (starts the room clock)
  • [ ] Realize capital losses to offset 2026 gains (mind the superficial-loss rule)
  • [ ] Charitable donations: donate by Dec 31 to claim for 2026
  • [ ] If self-employed: consider prepaying deductible expenses

Questions fréquentes

I arrived in Canada in 2026. What is my TFSA room?

$7,000 for 2026 only. Room accrues only for years you were a tax resident after age 18.

Can I contribute to an RRSP in my first year?

You need earned income reported on a Canadian tax return first — most newcomers' first RRSP room appears for the year after arrival.

What if I over-contribute to my TFSA by accident?

Withdraw the excess immediately; the 1%-per-month penalty applies until it is removed.
