Public Transport in South Africa: Gautrain, Minibus Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The short answer

South Africa has no comprehensive public transport network — car ownership is the norm, and most newcomers end up driving. But the pieces that do exist are useful: the Gautrain rapid rail in Gauteng, Cape Town's MyCiTi buses, long-distance coaches, and ubiquitous ride-hailing. The famous minibus taxis move millions daily but are best left to locals who know the routes and norms.

Gautrain (Johannesburg–Pretoria)

  • The one true rapid-transit system: Johannesburg (Park Station, Sandton, Rosebank, Marlboro) ↔ Pretoria (Hatfield) ↔ O.R. Tambo Airport, running roughly 05:30–20:30.
  • Clean, safe, fast — Sandton to the airport in about 15 minutes. Fares are premium by local standards (airport–Sandton around R200+, check current tariffs).
  • Contactless Gautrain card or bank card; the airport link is the single most useful leg for newcomers.

MyCiTi (Cape Town)

  • Cape Town's bus rapid transit: trunk routes along the West Coast corridor, airport–Civic Centre, and feeder routes. Affordable and air-conditioned, but coverage is limited to certain corridors.
  • Requires a myconnect card; no cash on board.

Minibus taxis

  • 16-seater minibuses running fixed routes — the backbone of South African commuting, cheap and frequent.
  • For newcomers: routes are unmarked, stops are informal, and driving standards vary. Useful to know about, risky to rely on until you know the city. If you use them, ride the main commuter corridors in daytime.

Ride-hailing and coaches

  • Uber and Bolt operate in all major cities — cheap by global standards, the default newcomer transport. InDrive also operates in some areas.
  • Long-distance coaches: Intercape, Greyhound (closed in 2021, relaunched under new ownership in 2022) and others link the major cities (Joburg–Cape Town ~20 hours by road). Comfortable sleeper coaches make the overnight trip viable.
  • Trains: limited — the luxury tourist trains (Rovos Rail, Blue Train) are experiences, not transport. Shosholoza Meyl long-distance passenger rail is minimal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I live in Johannesburg without a car?

In Sandton/Rosebank along the Gautrain, yes — with Uber filling gaps. Elsewhere it is painful. Most newcomers buy a car within months.

Is the Gautrain safe?

Yes — it is widely considered the safest public transport in the country, with security at stations and on trains.

How do I pay for MyCiTi?

With a myconnect smart card, loaded at stations and retailers. Exact fare rules change — check myconnect distribution points on arrival.

Do I tip Uber drivers?

Not required, but rounding up or 10% for good service is common and appreciated.
