The short answer
Getting connected in South Africa is easy and cheap — prepaid SIMs are sold everywhere and home fibre is widely available in the cities. The one bureaucratic step is RICA: every SIM must be registered to a named person with ID and proof of address, the same proof-of-address document that trips up so many newcomers at the bank.
Mobile: operators and plans
Operators: Vodacom and MTN (largest, best coverage), Telkom (cheaper, weaker rural coverage), Rain (data-only, cheapest per GB).
Prepaid is the norm for newcomers — buy a SIM at the airport, a supermarket or any operator store, top up with airtime/data bundles. No contract, no credit check.
RICA registration: required by law before the SIM is activated — bring your passport and proof of address (same FICA-style documents as banking). Unregistered SIMs get disconnected.
Costs (approximate): 1–2 GB data bundles roughly R85–R150; larger bundles and Rain's unlimited-ish data plans are popular with heavy users. Expect to pay more per GB than in Asia, less than in the US.
Home internet: fibre
Fibre to the home is the default in cities and suburbs — providers include Afrihost, MWEB, Vox, Rain and the operators' own ISPs, running over open-access networks (Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot).
Typical pricing: 20–50 Mbps around R500–R800/month; 100–200 Mbps around R800–R1,200/month. Line rental and ISP are often bundled in one bill.
Check coverage first: fibre availability is street-by-street — confirm with the building/complex before signing a lease if fast internet matters to you.
Load-shedding: scheduled power cuts have eased since 2024 but have not vanished — a small UPS for your router is standard expat equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my foreign phone?
Yes — South Africa uses GSM; unlocked phones work fine. eSIM support is growing (Vodacom, MTN) but physical SIMs remain the reliable default.
How do I top up?
Airtime/data vouchers at any supermarket or petrol station, via banking apps, or USSD codes. Most operators let you convert airtime to data in-app.
Is the internet censored or restricted?
No — South Africa has an open internet with no systematic censorship.
What about 5G?
Available in the major metros on Vodacom, MTN and Rain — useful as a home-internet alternative where fibre has not reached.
