The short answer
Spanish cities have excellent public transport, and monthly passes are cheap by European standards. The two systems you'll use most — Madrid's abono and Barcelona's T-usual — both carry temporary discounts through 2026.
Madrid: the abono transportes
Madrid runs on the personal Tarjeta Transporte Público (€4 for the card), loaded with a 30-day abono. Thanks to a 40% extraordinary discount, 2026 prices are:
The discount is confirmed through 31 December 2026. The Zone A pass covers metro, city buses (EMT), and Cercanías commuter trains within zones 0 and A — including the metro airport stations with no €3 supplement.
Barcelona: the T-usual
Barcelona uses the T-mobilitat card system (physical card €4.50, mobile wallet €1) loaded with the 30-day T-usual. A 50% discount applies from 15 January 2026:
Single-parent and large families: from €11.40 · Unemployed: €5.65 (all zones)
The T-usual is valid on TMB metro and buses, FGC trains, trams, and Rodalies commuter trains — including the airport metro stations on L9 Sud.
Cercanías and Rodalies: the suburban trains
Cercanías (Renfe, Madrid and other cities): commuter rail integrated with the local pass system. In Madrid, zones 0–A Cercanías rides are included in the abono.
Rodalies (Catalonia): the equivalent network around Barcelona, included in the T-usual for your zones.
Bonus: since 2022, frequent-traveler Cercanías/Rodalies passes have been free or nearly free under rolling government promotions — check Renfe's current "abono recurrente" before buying single tickets for regular commutes.
Other cities
Valencia (EMT buses, Metrovalencia, tram): monthly passes exist (Bonobus/EMT + metro bundles) — prices change often, check emtvalencia.es and metrovalencia.es for current fares.
Seville (TUSSAM buses, metro, tram): the bonobus and 30-day passes are the standard — check tussam.es for current fares.
Most cities now accept contactless bank-card payment directly on buses and metro gates — convenient for visitors, though the monthly pass wins if you ride daily.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are metered and reasonably priced; official ranks at airports and stations. Airport supplements exist (e.g., Madrid–airport flat-ish regulated fares) — check the sticker on the window.
Cabify (Spanish, strongest in Madrid/Barcelona), Uber, and Bolt all operate; prices are usually close to taxis, with upfront quotes.
Free Now (formerly MyTaxi) lets you hail licensed taxis by app — useful where Uber coverage is thin.
Night buses (búhos) run in Madrid and Barcelona when the metro closes (~1:30–6:00 AM, later on weekends).
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Spanish ID to get a transport card?
No — a passport works for the personal cards in both Madrid and Barcelona.
Can I share my monthly pass?
No — the abono and T-usual are personal and non-transferable, with your ID number printed on them. Inspectors fine on the spot.
Is the airport reachable on the monthly pass?
Yes in both cities: Madrid's abono Zona A covers the airport metro stations with no supplement; Barcelona's T-usual includes the L9 Sud airport stations.
What if I only visit for a few days?
Both cities sell tourist passes (Madrid: 1–7 days, Zone A/T; Barcelona: Hola Barcelona 2–5 days with unlimited rides). For very short stays, contactless payment per ride is simplest.
Are the 2026 discounts permanent?
No — both are explicitly temporary (Madrid through end of 2026; Barcelona's 50% reduction is a rolling policy renewed periodically). Full fares are roughly double the discounted prices, so re-check before budgeting long-term.
