Missed the 14-Day Anmeldung? How the Steuer-ID Actually Arrives

The short answer
Don't panic, but don't wait longer either. Offices see this constantly with newcomers; many register late with no fine at all, but the risk is real — expats have reported fines for multi-month delays. Book the appointment today, bring complete paperwork, and be apologetic but factual at the counter. Bringing the registration form pre-filled and a printout of your appointment confirmation helps you look organized, which is half the battle with German bureaucracy.
The Anmeldung: what to bring, what you get
Deadline: 14 days from the day you move in (Einzugsdatum, the move-in date) — not from when you signed the lease. §17 of the Bundesmeldegesetz (BMG) sets this; the theoretical fine ceiling is €1,000.
Where: the Bürgeramt or Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office) of your city. Book the appointment (Termin) online as early as possible — in Berlin and Munich, slots run out weeks ahead.
Documents: passport (plus visa/residence permit if you have one), Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (your landlord signs this — Airbnb and hotel bookings don't count, you need a real address), and the completed registration form (Anmeldeformular, available on your city's website).
You walk out with: the Meldebescheinigung — the piece of paper that unlocks bank accounts, SIM cards, and your tax ID.
What if you're already past 14 days?

The Steuer-ID: the waiting game
The Steuer-ID (Steuerliche Identifikationsnummer) is an 11-digit number that never changes — same number for life, across employers and cities.
You do nothing. After your Anmeldung, the BZSt (Bundeszentralamt für Steuern) generates it automatically and mails the letter to your registered address. Typical delivery: 2–4 weeks.
The mailbox trap: the letter is addressed to your registered name — if your name isn't on the mailbox (Briefkasten), the post office returns it to the BZSt and you wait again. Put your name on the mailbox the day you register.
While you wait: your employer must tax you at the emergency rate, Steuerklasse VI (tax class VI — the highest withholding rate), until your Steuer-ID arrives. This is painful on your first payslips, but it's not lost money: file your tax return (Steuererklärung) next year and the overpaid tax comes back.
Still no letter after 4 weeks?
Go to your local Finanzamt (tax office) in person with your passport and Meldebescheinigung — they can look up your Steuer-ID on the spot.
Or ask the BZSt to reissue the letter (Steuer-ID erneut zusenden lassen); contact details are on the BZSt website.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work before my Steuer-ID arrives?
Yes — your employer registers you with Steuerklasse VI and adjusts your payroll once the number comes in. File a tax return the following year to reclaim the difference.
Is the Anmeldung really mandatory? What if I'm just renting a room short-term?
Anyone living in Germany (even short-term, even as an EU citizen) must register. The only common exception: stays under 3 months with no fixed address.
My landlord refuses to sign the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. What now?
They are legally required to issue it within two weeks of your move-in (§19 BMG). A polite written request citing the paragraph usually works; refusal can cost them a fine too.
Does the Steuer-ID expire if I leave Germany?
No. It stays assigned to you for life and reactivates if you return — one less thing to redo.
What's the difference between the Steuer-ID and the Steuernummer?
The Steuer-ID is your personal 11-digit ID, issued once, never changes. The Steuernummer is a separate number your Finanzamt assigns when you become tax-liable as a freelancer or business — different number, different purpose.
