The short answer
Cut one anchor: skip Dresden/Hamburg (Day 4) or shorten Berlin to 2 days and fold Neuschwanstein into the Munich block as a long day trip. The Rhine Valley can compress to an afternoon if you overnight in Cologne instead.
The route at a glance (9 days / 8 nights)
Days
Base
Why
1–3
Berlin
Brandenburg Gate, East Side Gallery, Museum Island, day-trip option to Potsdam
4
Dresden or Hamburg
Dresden: baroque old town (2h by train from Berlin). Hamburg: harbor, Speicherstadt — either works as a single stopover
5–6
Munich
Marienplatz, English Garden, Nymphenburg Palace, beer gardens
7
Neuschwanstein (day trip from Munich)
Castle interior tour + Marienbrücke bridge viewpoint
Deutschlandticket (€63/month, 2026) — covers all of these local/regional segments in the plan:
Munich ↔ Füssen (Neuschwanstein), via regional trains
Regional trains and S-Bahn/U-Bahn/trams/buses in every city you stay in (Berlin AB zone, Munich, Cologne, Rhine Valley RE/RB trains)
Koblenz ↔ Bacharach ↔ St. Goar ↔ Bingen along the river (regional RE trains — the scenic river run)
Not covered: ICE/IC/EC trains and buses/coaches. On days you ride an ICE, the Deutschlandticket still covers your city transit at both ends.
Day-by-day notes
Days 1–3, Berlin: Day 1 — Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag (book dome slot), Unter den Linden walk. Day 2 — Museum Island (2–3 hours), East Side Gallery, Kreuzberg evening. Day 3 — Potsdam palaces day trip (regional train, Deutschlandticket covers it) or Charlottenburg + the Berlin Wall Memorial.
Day 4, Dresden or Hamburg: Dresden — Frauenkirche, Zwinger, Elbe river walk; a compact, walkable baroque center ideal for one day. Hamburg — Speicherstadt warehouse district, harbor boat tour, Elbphilharmonie plaza view; bigger city, more effort per hour.
Days 5–6, Munich: Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt morning; afternoon at the English Garden or Nymphenburg; evening in a beer garden. Day 6 — Deutsches Museum (one of Europe's great science museums) or a Dachau memorial visit, both with public-transport access.
Day 7, Neuschwanstein: Early regional train Munich → Füssen (~2h, Deutschlandticket), bus to the ticket center. Book a castle tour slot at 11:00–12:00; walk up to Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge) afterward for the postcard view.
Day 8, Rhine Valley: Munich → Koblenz by ICE (long leg; early start). Store luggage, ride regional trains down the gorge to Bacharach; sleep there or in St. Goar — small wine towns with castle views.
Day 9, Cologne: Regional or ICE hop upriver to Cologne (~1.5–2h). Cathedral first (free entry), then Old Town (Altstadt) and the Rhine promenade; many flights home depart from Cologne/Bonn or Düsseldorf airports.
Trimming to 7 days
Cut one anchor: skip Dresden/Hamburg (Day 4) or shorten Berlin to 2 days and fold Neuschwanstein into the Munich block as a long day trip. The Rhine Valley can compress to an afternoon if you overnight in Cologne instead.
Frequently asked questions
Do I really need two train products?
For this route, yes. ICE tickets handle the long city-to-city jumps; the Deutschlandticket pays for itself in about two days of city transit and regional trips like Munich–Füssen.
Is the Deutschlandticket worth it for under a month?
Yes — one month's subscription covers your whole trip; just remember to cancel it before the renewal cutoff (it auto-renews monthly).
Can I reverse the route (start Cologne, end Berlin)?
Absolutely — the legs are symmetric. Start wherever you find the cheaper flight.
Berlin or Munich for more days?
Berlin for museums and history; Munich for Bavarian culture and the best day trips. First-timers usually enjoy Munich more but need Berlin's history — 2–3 days each is the sweet spot.
Is driving better than trains for this route?
Not for this itinerary. Parking in Berlin and Munich is painful and expensive; trains between these cities are frequent, fast, and city-center to city-center.
