Express Entry's New Median-Wage Points System (Nov 3, 2026): Deep Dive

The short answer

On October 16, 2026, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the biggest Express Entry CRS change in years: starting November 3, 2026, candidates earn new points based on their occupation's median wage relative to the national benchmark — and a qualifying job offer no longer needs an LMIA to score. Here is what the new rule says, who gains, and what to do before the deadline.

The 30-second version

  • New CRS points for eligible Canadian work experience in high-wage occupations: +20, +40 or +70.
  • New CRS points for a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation: +50, +70 or +100.
  • The two routes cannot be stacked — IRCC awards whichever gives more (max 150 without spouse, 140 with).
  • No LMIA required for the new job-offer points (or for FSW/FST job-offer eligibility under a temporary public policy).
  • Existing profiles are automatically recalculated; draws pause for up to two weeks.

How the wage tiers work

The test is the occupation's median wage — not your personal salary — measured against the national median-wage benchmark, using three years of Job Bank, Labour Force Survey and Census data (2023–2025 for the first list):

Occupation median wageJob-offer pointsWork-experience supplement
At least 2× benchmark100+70
1.5× to below 2×70+40
1.3× to below 1.5×50+20

A "high-wage occupation" for Express Entry means a median of at least 1.3× the overall Canadian workforce median.

Work-experience route vs job-offer route

You need at least 12 months of qualifying Canadian experience (TEER 0–3, within the last 10 years) for the supplement; the highest tier you qualify for sets the bonus. Duration-based CRS points (up to 80) still apply on top. Example: one year of Canadian experience in a 2× occupation = 40 duration points + 70 supplement = 110 in this factor.

The job-offer route instead gives a flat 50/70/100 based on the offer's NOC tier. IRCC takes the higher of the two routes — never the sum.

Which occupations qualify: NOC matters, not job titles

Real examples from IRCC's official November 3 list: 2× tier — engineering managers (NOC 20010), family physicians (31102), university professors (41200). 1.5× tier — software engineers (21231), civil engineers (21300), registered nurses (31301), power system electricians (72202). 1.3× tier — accountants (11100), industrial electricians (72201), lab technologists (32120), bricklayers (72320).

Note the trap: "electrician" spans two tiers depending on the exact NOC. Check your five-digit code against IRCC's official list — a high personal salary in a non-listed NOC earns nothing here.

LMIA removed — but fraud checks stay

From November 3, a qualifying offer needs no LMIA for the new points, and a temporary public policy also waives specified LMIA requirements for FSW/FST eligibility. IRCC still verifies that offers are genuine. This does not change LMIA rules for temporary foreign worker hiring — that is a separate ESDC process.

Transitional quirk: IRCC's online form may still ask "was a positive LMIA issued?" — their official workaround is to answer Yes with placeholder entries (LMIA number 00000). Follow the live IRCC instructions exactly.

What to do before November 3

  1. If you may qualify for job-offer points, update your Express Entry profile with the offer details (employer name/address, start date, five-digit NOC, compensation, duties, hours) before November 3 — this is not automatic.
  2. Canadian work-experience scores recalculate automatically; still, verify your work history and NOC codes are correct.
  3. Compare your NOC against IRCC's November 3 high-wage occupation list.
  4. Expect no draws for up to two weeks while IRCC recalculates the pool.

Don't confuse this with the July 2026 LMIA threshold update

Separately, ESDC updated the provincial median + 20% thresholds that decide whether an LMIA application goes through the high-wage or low-wage stream (effective July 17, 2026): Ontario $36.92/hr, BC $38.40, Alberta $37.50, Quebec $36.00. That rule governs LMIA streams; the November 3 rule governs Express Entry CRS points. Different systems, different numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is my salary what counts?

No. The occupation's median wage classification counts, not your individual pay.

Can I get both the experience supplement and the job-offer points?

No. IRCC awards the higher of the two routes only.

Do I need to do anything if I have no job offer?

Your work-experience points recalculate automatically, but check your NOC codes are right.

Will draws happen in early November?

IRCC says invitation rounds will be paused during recalculation, which may take up to two weeks.
