The short answer

Xinjiang (新疆, Xīnjiāng) — "New Frontier" — is China's largest region, one-sixth of the country, and its most diverse: Uyghur, Kazakh, Hui, and Han cultures; deserts, alpine lakes, glaciers, and grasslands. A full tour needs 10–14 days and usually splits into northern Xinjiang (北疆: Urumqi–Kanas–Ili) and southern Xinjiang (南疆: Turpan–Kashgar). Pick one loop if your time is short.

乌鲁木齐 & 天池 Urumqi & Heavenly Lake

Urumqi (乌鲁木齐, Wūlǔmùqí) is the regional capital and the standard entry point.

  • 天山天池 Heavenly Lake of Tianshan (Tiānshān Tiānchí) — The alpine lake (1,907 m) on the north side of the Bogda Shan range, ~45 km east of Urumqi: deep blue water ringed by spruce forest and snow peaks. Boat rides, lakeside boardwalks, and Kazakh yurts. Half-day to full-day trip from the city.
  • 新疆维吾尔自治区博物馆 Xinjiang Regional Museum (Xīnjiāng Wéiwú'ěr Zìzhìqū Bówùguǎn) — Famous for the Loulan Beauty and other Tarim Basin mummies, plus Silk Road textiles and Buddhist grotto art. Free entry; bring ID.
  • 国际大巴扎 International Grand Bazaar (Guójì Dàbāzhā) — The giant Uyghur-style bazaar complex downtown: dried fruit, nuts, carpets, naan, lamb skewers, and the evening food street.
  • 红山公园 Hongshan Park (Hóngshān Gōngyuán) — The red-hill city park with the pagoda viewpoint over Urumqi.
  • 新疆古生态园 Xinjiang Ancient Ecological Park — Akhal-Teke ("sweat-blood") horses and ancient poplar-wood sculptures on the city edge.

喀纳斯 & 阿勒泰 Kanas & Altay

Kanas (喀纳斯, Kānàsī) in Altay Prefecture is the "Switzerland of the East" — alpine lakes, larch forests, and Tuvan villages near the borders with Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan.

  • 喀纳斯湖 Kanas Lake (Kānàsī Hú) — The crescent-shaped glacial lake (1,340 m) famous for its color-changing water and the legend of the lake monster (giant taimen trout). The classic route: shuttle bus to the lake, then walk or boat to the Three Bays — 卧龙湾 Wolong Bay, 月亮湾 Moon Bay, 神仙湾 Fairy Bay. Go in September for the golden larch forests.
  • 禾木村 Hemu Village (Hémù Cūn) — The Tuvan village of wooden cabins in a birch valley: sunrise over the misty village from the hillside platform is the iconic Kanas photo.
  • 白哈巴村 Baihaba Village (Báihābā Cūn) — "The first village of the northwest," a Kazakh/Tuvan border village near Kazakhstan — quieter and more frontier-feeling than Hemu. Border area: bring your passport.
  • 五彩滩 Rainbow Beach (Wǔcǎi Tān) — The colorful Yadan landform on the Irtysh River near Burqin, best at sunset on the way to/from Kanas.
  • 可可托海 Keketuohai (Kěkětuōhǎi) — The granite canyon and alpine valley (Irtysh Grand Canyon) southeast of Altay, a UNESCO Global Geopark.

吐鲁番 Turpan

Turpan (吐鲁番, Tǔlǔfān) is the desert oasis 150 m below sea level — one of the hottest, lowest, driest, and sweetest (grapes!) places in China.

  • 火焰山 Flaming Mountains (Huǒyàn Shān) — The eroded red-sandstone hills east of Turpan that glow like fire at certain hours — the "Flaming Mountains" of Journey to the West. A giant thermometer sculpture stands at the scenic area entrance; summer ground temperatures are extreme. Visit early morning.
  • 葡萄沟 Grape Valley (Pútáo Gōu) — The 8-km green valley of vineyards and trellised grape corridors; come August–September for the grape harvest and fresh raisins.
  • 交河故城 Jiaohe Ancient City (Jiāohé Gùchéng) — The 2,300-year-old ruined garrison city on a river island plateau, the world's largest and oldest surviving earthen city — UNESCO World Heritage as part of the Silk Roads listing (2014). Best light at sunset.
  • 坎儿井 Karez wells (Kǎn'érjǐng) — The ancient underground irrigation channels that made the Turpan oasis possible; the Karez folk-custom park shows a working section.
  • 高昌故城 Gaochang Ancient City (Gāochāng Gùchéng) — The larger Silk Road oasis-city ruins near the Flaming Mountains, where Xuanzang once preached.
  • 柏孜克里克千佛洞 Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves (Bózīkèlǐkè Qiānfó Dòng) — Buddhist grottoes in a gorge under the Flaming Mountains, with 5th–9th century murals.

南疆 & 伊犁 Southern Xinjiang & Ili

South of the Tianshan: Kashgar's old city, and the grasslands and lavender of Ili.

  • 喀什古城 Kashgar Old City (Kāshí Gǔchéng) — One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, a 2,000-year Silk Road oasis at China's far west. Wander the renovated old-town lanes, the handicraft street, and the livestock market (Sunday is biggest).
  • 艾提尕尔清真寺 Id Kah Mosque (Àitígǎ'ěr Qīngzhēnsì) — China's largest mosque, at the heart of the old city — a landmark of Uyghur Islamic architecture since 1442.
  • 香妃墓 Afaq Khoja Mausoleum (Xiāngfēi Mù) — The 17th-century tiled tomb complex of the Afaq Khoja family, Kashgar's most beautiful Islamic architecture.
  • 赛里木湖 Sayram Lake (Sàilǐmù Hú) — The high alpine lake (2,073 m) on the Ili road, ringed by snow peaks and summer flower meadows — often called "the last tear of the Atlantic" for its pure blue water.
  • 伊犁薰衣草 Ili lavender (Yīlí Xūnyīcǎo) — The lavender fields around Huocheng County bloom June–July, China's largest lavender growing area — purple seas under the Tianshan.
  • 那拉提草原 Nalati Grassland (Nàlātí CǎoYuán) — The classic Ili alpine grassland: rolling green valleys, Kazakh yurts, and horseback treks in summer.

Practical Tips

Best season: It varies by area — Kanas in September (golden larches), Ili lavender June–July, Turpan grape season August–September. Overall May–October works; avoid the July–August heat peak in Turpan unless you plan around it. Kashgar is pleasant spring and autumn.

Foreign visitors — permits and ID: Some areas of Xinjiang have restricted zones requiring permits (especially border areas like Baihaba, Tashkurgan, and parts of southern Xinjiang near the borders). Carry your passport at all times — hotels register you with the police, and there are checkpoints on many roads. Check current local regulations before heading to any border area, and confirm with your hotel or a local travel agency whether your planned route needs special permits.

Heat: Turpan is one of China's hottest places — summer air temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, and the Flaming Mountains scenic area has recorded extreme ground heat. Visit outdoor sites before 10:00 or after 17:00, carry 2+ liters of water, and don't underestimate the dry heat.

Getting around: Distances are enormous. Urumqi–Kanas is a full travel day (fly to Altay or take the long bus); the Ili loop (Sayram Lake → lavender → Nalati) is best by hired car over 3–4 days; Kashgar is a 1.5-hr flight from Urumqi. Book internal flights early in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can foreign tourists travel freely in Xinjiang?

A: Most major tourist areas (Urumqi, Turpan, Kanas, Ili, Kashgar city) are open to foreign visitors, but border zones and some southern areas require permits or are restricted. Rules change, so check the latest local regulations and confirm your itinerary with a licensed local agency before you go.

Q: How many days do I need for northern vs southern Xinjiang?

A: Northern Xinjiang (Urumqi–Tianchi–Kanas–Ili) needs 7–9 days; southern Xinjiang (Turpan–Kashgar) needs 5–7 days. Doing both properly is 12–14 days. If you have under a week, pick one.
