Brazil Work Visa Guide 2026: VITEM V, Employer Sponsorship and the CRNM

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. Verify important decisions with the CRA/IRS or a qualified professional (for health topics, a licensed healthcare provider). You use this information at your own risk.
The short answer

A Brazilian work visa is not something you apply for on your own: your Brazilian employer starts the process, the Ministry of Labor (MTE) authorizes the hire, and only then do you visit a consulate. Here is the full sequence for the VITEM V in 2026 — what the employer does, what you do, and the CRNM registration that completes your legal status after arrival.

Step 1: the employer gets MTE authorization

The Brazilian company applies to the Ministry of Labor and Employment (Ministério do Trabalho e Emprego, MTE) for authorization to hire a foreign worker. This is the decisive step — the consulate cannot issue a VITEM V without it. The employer must justify the hire and meet local labor-law requirements — follow the MTE's current published documentary checklist.

Step 2: the consular visa

With the MTE authorization in hand, you apply for the VITEM V at a Brazilian consulate in your country of residence. Typical documents include your passport, the MTE authorization, the employment contract, proof of qualifications and a clean criminal record — confirm the exact checklist and fees with the consulate where you apply, as both vary by nationality and consulate.

Step 3: enter Brazil and register for the CRNM

After entry, you must register with the Federal Police (Polícia Federal) and obtain your CRNM (Carteira de Registro Nacional Migratório), the foreigner ID card that replaced the old RNE. Temporary-visa holders must register within 90 days of entry (Decree 9.199/2017) — do not postpone it. The CRNM is your proof of legal residence and is required for a bank account, a lease, a driver's license and formal registration of your employment.

First residence: usually 2 years, renewable

A first VITEM V grant typically comes with 2 years of residence, renewable. Renewal depends on the employment continuing and on clean immigration and criminal records — confirm current criteria with your employer's immigration counsel. After enough time as a resident (commonly 4 years), the work route can lead to permanent residence and eventually to naturalization after 4 years of continuous residence.

Get your CPF early

The CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is the taxpayer number required for almost everything in Brazil: banking, renting, mobile phone plans, receiving your salary. Foreigners can obtain it at a Brazilian consulate abroad through e-consular — do it before you fly so you arrive with your paperwork ready.

The digital nomad visa is not a work visa

VITEM XIV (digital nomad) covers remote work for a foreign employer — it does not authorize work for a Brazilian company and does not replace the VITEM V. If a Brazilian company will pay you, you need the VITEM V process described above.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch employers on a VITEM V?

A change of employer generally requires a new authorization process — do not assume your visa transfers automatically (a change of employer normally requires a new authorization).

Can my family come with me?

Spouses and children can generally obtain residence through family reunion linked to your work residence — details follow current regulations, so confirm with the consulate.

What happens if I lose my job?

Your residence is tied to the employment that justified it. Losing the job can jeopardize renewal — consult an immigration lawyer promptly rather than letting your status lapse.

Can I apply for the VITEM V while in Brazil on a tourist visa?

Generally no — the visa is issued by consulates abroad, and the MTE authorization must come first (exceptions are limited).

How long does the whole process take?

Timelines vary with the MTE stage and the consulate. Ask your employer's immigration counsel for a current estimate.
