The short answer

Australia is too big to see in one trip, so it pays to pick headline sights you can cluster by region. These are the places worth building an itinerary around.

Sydney's icons

  • Sydney Opera House — the sail-shaped landmark on Bennelong Point. Join a guided tour or, better, book an evening performance and see the building lit up at night.
  • Sydney Harbour Bridge — walk or cycle across for free, climb the south-east pylon lookout for harbour views, or book the BridgeClimb (reserve ahead in peak season) for the full summit.
  • Bondi Beach — Australia's most famous surf beach. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk (about 6 km) strings together beaches, cliffs, and ocean pools; it's an easy half-day.

Blue Mountains (day trip from Sydney)

About two hours by train from Sydney Central to Katoomba. Echo Point lookout and the Three Sisters rock formation are the headline views, and short bushwalks drop into the valley below. Summer bushfire smoke can cut visibility, so check conditions before you go.

Melbourne: laneways and markets

Melbourne's personality lives in its laneways — Hosier Lane for street art, Degraves Street and Centre Place for coffee culture. The Queen Victoria Market is the city's historic food and goods market; check its opening days before visiting, as it isn't open every day.

Great Ocean Road (Victoria)

One of the world's great coastal drives, running from near Melbourne to Port Campbell. The Twelve Apostles limestone stacks are the payoff, best at sunrise or sunset. Allow one long day minimum, two days comfortably; book accommodation in Port Campbell or Apollo Bay ahead during summer and school holidays.

Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef (Queensland)

The reef is reached by boat, not from the beach — day trips depart from Cairns or Port Douglas. Port Douglas is closer to the outer reef, so boat rides are shorter; Cairns has more operators and more budget options. The dry season (May–October) brings the calmest seas and best visibility; stinger season runs roughly November–April, when reputable boats provide stinger suits. Book reef trips a few days ahead in peak season.

Daintree Rainforest

North of Port Douglas, the Daintree is one of the world's oldest rainforests, where rainforest meets reef. Pair it with a reef trip over two to three days based in the Port Douglas area; guided walks explain far more than signage alone.

The Whitsundays

74 islands off the Queensland coast, sailed from Airlie Beach. Whitehaven Beach's white silica sand is the postcard shot. Day sails and multi-day trips book out in school holidays — reserve ahead.

Uluru–Kata Tjuta (Northern Territory)

Australia's red heart and a sacred place to the Aṉangu people — climbing Uluru has been closed since 2019, and visitors are asked to respect its cultural significance. Walk part of the 10.6 km base trail, visit the Cultural Centre first, and watch sunrise or sunset from the designated viewing areas as the rock changes colour. Visit April–October, when daytime temperatures are manageable; summer regularly exceeds 40°C. Flights and the limited accommodation at Yulara book out — reserve early.

Kangaroo Island (South Australia)

Reach it by ferry from Cape Jervis (about 45 minutes) or by air from Adelaide. Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, and the sea lion colony at Seal Bay are the signatures. Two to three days does it justice; book the ferry with a vehicle well ahead in summer.

Byron Bay (New South Wales)

A surf town with a famous lighthouse walk — the Cape Byron track climbs to the easternmost point of mainland Australia, with dolphin and (in season) whale spotting. Relaxed, walkable, and an easy stop between Sydney and Brisbane.

Tasmania: Freycinet and beyond

Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park is Tasmania's signature view — a steep but short climb to the lookout. The island's best weather runs November–April. Pair it with Hobart's MONA museum if you have extra days.

Practical tips

  • Season strategy — there is no single perfect month. The tropical north (Cairns, reef, Daintree) is best in the dry season, May–October. The south (Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania) shines in spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May). September–October is the best compromise for a multi-region trip.
  • Book ahead — reef day trips, Uluru flights and accommodation, Whitsundays sails, and the BridgeClimb all sell out in peak periods.
  • Distances are enormous — Sydney to Cairns is roughly a 3-hour flight. Don't try to drive between regions on a short trip: fly between clusters, drive within them.
  • Sun safety — UV levels are extreme even on cloudy days. Hat, sunscreen, and water are non-negotiable, especially at Uluru and on the reef.

Frequently asked questions

What's the best month for a first trip?

September–October or April–May gives the best balance across regions — pleasant in the south and still dry in the north.

How long do I need to see the highlights?

Two to three weeks minimum for Sydney, Melbourne, the reef, and Uluru. Ten days forces hard choices (see the sample itinerary article).

Cairns or Port Douglas for the Great Barrier Reef?

Port Douglas is closer to the outer reef, so boat rides are shorter. Cairns offers more operators, more price points, and a livelier backpacker scene.

Is Uluru worth the detour?

If you can spare two full days, yes — it's unlike anywhere else on earth. But it is a real time commitment: fly in, stay at Yulara, and don't try to squeeze it into a single day.

Can I self-drive the Great Ocean Road?

Yes — it's well signposted and designed for it. Remember Australia drives on the left. One very long day is possible; two days with an overnight stop is far better.
