The short answer
New Zealand income tax is progressive, with five marginal bands from 10.5% to 39%. There is no tax-free threshold — tax applies from the very first dollar you earn. The rates below took effect on 1 April 2025 and apply to both the 2025–26 and 2026–27 tax years.
The 2025–27 individual tax brackets
$0 – $15,600 → 10.5%
$15,601 – $53,500 → 17.5%
$53,501 – $78,100 → 30%
$78,101 – $180,000 → 33%
$180,001 and over → 39%
What "marginal" means
Each rate applies only to the dollars inside its own band — not to your whole income. Earning $80,000 does not mean you pay 33% on $80,000. It means you pay 10.5% on the first $15,600, 17.5% on the next chunk, 30% on the next, and 33% only on the final $1,900. A raise that pushes you into a higher band can never make you worse off: only the dollars above the boundary are taxed at the higher rate.

Income tax: $13,220.50. Effective rate: about 18.9% of the $70,000 — well below the 30% marginal band the person sits in. This is the number most newcomers misread: your marginal rate is not your tax rate.
Newcomer pitfalls
No tax-free allowance. Unlike many countries, New Zealand has no personal allowance. Your employer deducts tax on every dollar of wages via PAYE.
The 39% band. Income over $180,000 is taxed at 39% — the highest individual marginal rate. This matters for high earners negotiating salary packages, because every extra dollar above $180,000 keeps only 61 cents.
Residency drives the rate table. These bands apply to tax residents. If you have just arrived, check the tax residency rules first — and whether the 48-month transitional resident exemption applies to you.
Frequently asked questions
Does New Zealand have a tax-free threshold?
No. There is no personal allowance or tax-free bracket — income tax starts at 10.5% on the first dollar earned.
When did the current brackets start?
The current five-band schedule took effect on 1 April 2025 and applies to the 2025–26 and 2026–27 tax years.
Will a pay rise into a higher bracket cost me money overall?
No. Only the dollars above the threshold are taxed at the higher rate. You always keep more after tax than before the raise.
How is tax collected on wages?
Through PAYE — your employer deducts tax each payday using your tax code. At year end, IRD auto-calculates an income tax assessment for most employees.
