The short answer
France taxes income with a progressive scale — only the slice of income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. The short answer: the 2026 scale, set by the loi de finances pour 2026 (promulgated 19 February 2026) and revalued by +0.9% for inflation, applies to 2025 income declared in spring 2026: 0% up to €11,600; 11% from €11,601 to €29,579; 30% from €29,580 to €84,577; 41% from €84,578 to €181,917; and 45% above €181,917. The thresholds apply per part of the quotient familial.

The revalorisation of +0.9% means every threshold rose with inflation, so a purely inflation-driven pay rise does not push you into a higher effective rate. (For comparison, the 2025 scale for 2024 income was revalued by +1.8%.) The top rate of 45% has been unchanged since 2012.
How the progressive calculation works
A common mistake is thinking that crossing into a higher bracket taxes all your income at that rate. It does not: each bracket taxes only the portion of income that falls inside it. Take a single person with €40,000 of taxable income in 2026 (one part):
€0–€11,600: €11,600 × 0% = €0
€11,601–€29,579: €17,979 × 11% = €1,977.69
€29,580–€40,000: €10,420 × 30% = €3,126
Total: €5,103.69 — an average rate of about 12.8%, far below the 30% marginal rate.
France's official simulator on impots.gouv.fr applies the scale, the family quotient, and the décote automatically.
The quotient familial: parts matter
Tax is computed on household income divided by the number of parts: 1 part for a single person, 2 for a married or PACS couple, plus 0.5 per child for the first two children and 1 per child from the third onward (single parents get an extra half-part in some cases). The scale applies to the income per part; the resulting tax is then multiplied back by the number of parts. The tax advantage of extra half-parts is capped by law (the plafonnement du quotient familial).
Marginal rate vs. average rate
Your marginal rate (taux marginal) is the rate applied to your last euro of income — it decides whether extra income is worth it. Your average rate (taux moyen) is total tax divided by total income and is always lower. France also uses a reduced default withholding grid for the prélèvement à la source, updated in May 2026 to reflect the new scale.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Which income does the 2026 scale apply to?
A: Income earned in 2025, declared in spring 2026. French tax scales are always set by the finance law voted late in the previous year and promulgated early in the year of filing.
Q: If my income just exceeds a threshold, is everything taxed at the higher rate?
A: No. Only the portion above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate — that is the whole point of a progressive scale.
Q: How do couples benefit from the family quotient?
A: A married or PACS couple gets 2 parts, so each partner's slice of household income is taxed against the scale separately, which typically lowers the total versus two separate single filings.
Q: Where can I get an official estimate of my tax?
A: The tax administration's free simulator on impots.gouv.fr models the 2026 scale for 2025 income, including the quotient familial and the décote.
