The short answer
Filing in France is a two-step system: tax is collected from your pay as you earn it, and the annual declaration reconciles what you actually owe. The short answer: the 2026 campaign for 2025 income opened online on 9 April 2026 on impots.gouv.fr; the paper deadline was 19 May 2026; online deadlines were 21 May (départements 01–19 and non-residents), 28 May (départements 20–54), and 4 June 2026 (départements 55–976). Online filing is mandatory if you have internet access.
The 2026 calendar
Deadline
Who
19 May 2026
Paper declarations (for those who cannot file online)
21 May 2026, 11:59 pm
Online — zone 1: départements 01–19 and non-residents
28 May 2026, 11:59 pm
Online — zone 2: départements 20–54
4 June 2026, 11:59 pm
Online — zone 3: départements 55–976
The applicable zone is determined by your address on 1 January 2026. Missing the deadline triggers late-filing penalties, so set a reminder well before your zone's date.
The déclaration automatique: do nothing if nothing changed
Some households get the déclaration automatique (tacit declaration): if your pre-filled return already contains all your income and charges and you reported no change of situation (address, family status, withholding arrangements) in 2025, the administration validates your return automatically — you do nothing. Check your pre-filled data in your espace particulier under « Vérifier les données de ma déclaration ». If anything changed — marriage, a birth, a move, new income or deductions — you must correct and validate the return yourself by the normal deadlines.
Filing online, step by step
Log in to your espace particulier on impots.gouv.fr (or the Impots.gouv mobile app).
Open the pre-filled return: salaries, pensions, and bank interest reported by third parties are already entered.
Verify each box, add anything missing (rental income, freelance revenue, foreign income, donations, real expenses).
Sign and submit. You can correct the return online after submission — usually until December of the filing year.
Paper filing survives only for two exceptions: homes without internet access ("zone blanche") and taxpayers who declare they are unable to file electronically.
Prélèvement à la source: how tax is actually collected
Since 1 January 2019, French income tax is collected at source: your employer (or pension fund) withholds tax from each payslip at your personal rate, transmitted by the tax administration. Key points:
Your rate follows your return. The rate applied in autumn is recalculated from your latest filed declaration; the September update is the main annual adjustment.
Three rate options: the personalized household rate (taux personnalisé, default), an individualized rate for couples with very different incomes (taux individualisé), and a neutral default rate (taux neutre) based on a statutory grid — useful if you do not want your employer to see your household rate. The default grid was adjusted in May 2026 to reflect the new tax scale.
Self-employed and landlords do not have withholding; they pay monthly or quarterly acomptes contemporains (advance installments) based on declared income.
Update your rate after life events — marriage, birth, a big pay change — directly in your espace particulier; otherwise you may over- or under-withhold.
After filing: balance or refund
The declaration reconciles what was withheld against what you owe. If you underpaid, the solde (balance) is typically collected in monthly installments from September to December; if you overpaid — or are due tax credits — the administration refunds you, usually in summer. Notices (avis d'impôt) are issued in late summer.
Frequently asked questions
Q: I just moved to France. How do I file for the first time?
A: Newcomers with no tax account file a first declaration (paper or online via the dedicated first-filing route) to be registered; the administration then creates your espace particulier and sets up your withholding rate.
Q: I moved between zones during the year. Which deadline applies?
A: Your address on 1 January of the filing year determines your zone and deadline.
Q: What if I miss the deadline?
A: Late-filing penalties (majorations) apply, and interest accrues on unpaid amounts. If you realize you missed it, file as soon as possible — the penalty grows with the delay.
Q: I found an error after submitting. Can I fix it?
A: Yes. Online corrections are open for several months after filing (generally until December), and you can later file a corrective return (déclaration rectificative).
