How to File Taxes in Germany: ELSTER, Deadlines, and Tax Classes

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. The short answer

Most employees file their annual tax return (Steuererklärung) online through ELSTER (elster.de), Germany's free official tax portal. The general deadline is July 31 of the following year; returns prepared by a tax advisor (Steuerberater) get a statutory extension to the end of February of the second following year (in practice 1–2 March when that date falls on a weekend or holiday). Your employer withholds wage tax (Lohnsteuer) monthly based on your tax class (Steuerklasse): I for singles, III/V or IV/IV for married couples, VI for a second job.

Your tax class (Steuerklasse) — set at payroll

Class I — single, divorced, separated, or widowed employees. Classes III/V — married couples with very unequal incomes: the higher earner takes III (lower withholding, more net pay monthly), the lower earner takes V (higher withholding). Class IV/IV — married couples with similar incomes; this is the default and usually the fairest split. Class VI — a second or further job, withheld at the highest rate with no allowances. Your class is stored together with your Steuer-ID in the ELStAM database, which employers query automatically — you generally only need to act when your situation changes (marriage, separation, a new second job).

Filing with ELSTER — the free official route

ELSTER (elster.de) is the tax administration's own free portal: register once, receive an activation code by mail, and you can file every type of return electronically. Employees typically need the main form (Mantelbogen) plus Annex N (Anlage N) for employment income; freelancers and landlords add further annexes. Alternatives are commercial tax software or a Steuerberater (tax advisor) — worth considering if the German-only forms feel daunting or your situation is complex.

Deadlines and late filing

The general deadline is July 31 of the following year — so the 2026 return is due July 31, 2027. Returns prepared by a Steuerberater benefit from a statutory extension to the end of February of the second following year. Missing the deadline can trigger a late-filing surcharge (Verspätungszuschlag) assessed by the Finanzamt, so file on time or get professional help early.

Employees don't always have to file — but often should

If wage tax was withheld on your only income and your situation is simple, filing is usually voluntary. It is still worth filing when work-related expenses (Werbungskosten) exceed the standard employee allowance, you moved for a job, you had a second income, or you want to claim deductions for insurance, donations, or childcare — refunds are common. Filing becomes mandatory in situations such as receiving wage-replacement benefits or being in tax classes III/V; when in doubt, ask your Finanzamt.

The paper trail to keep

Keep your annual payslip (Lohnsteuerbescheinigung), receipts for work-related expenses, donation receipts, insurance statements, and — if applicable — rental documents. Germany runs on documentation, and the Finanzamt can ask for proof years after the fact.

Frequently asked questions

Is filing mandatory for employees?

Usually not, if Lohnsteuer was withheld and that was your only income. It becomes mandatory in cases like wage-replacement benefits (e.g., parental allowance), multiple simultaneous employers, or tax classes III/V. Voluntary filers can still claim back overpaid tax for prior years within the statutory window.

How long does a refund take?

Processing times vary widely by Finanzamt and season — from a few weeks to several months. Electronic ELSTER filings are generally processed faster than paper.

Can I file in English?

ELSTER's interface and forms are in German. Many newcomers use bilingual tax software or a Steuerberater for the first year, then handle ELSTER themselves once they know which annexes they need.

What does a Steuerberater cost?

Fees are regulated by a statutory schedule and scale with the complexity of your case and the amount at stake. For straightforward employee returns the cost is modest relative to the refunds they often uncover — get a quote first.

I left Germany mid-year. Do I still file?

Generally yes for the departure year if you had German-source income. Keep your Abmeldung (deregistration) confirmation and record the exact departure date.

What is the Lohnsteuerbescheinigung?

The annual wage-tax certificate your employer issues (usually electronically): gross pay, withheld Lohnsteuer, church tax, and social contributions. You need its figures for the return — most of it flows into Anlage N automatically if you use ELSTER with data retrieval.
