How to File Taxes in Brazil: The DIRPF Timeline, Step by Step

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. Verify important decisions with the CRA/IRS or a qualified professional (for health topics, a licensed healthcare provider). You use this information at your own risk.
The short answer

Filing income tax in Brazil means submitting the DIRPF — the Declaração de Ajuste Anual do Imposto sobre a Renda da Pessoa Física — each year between March and May for the previous calendar year's income. The short answer: get a CPF and a gov.br account, fill in the return (preferably with the pre-filled version), submit it online through the Receita Federal's program or portal, and pay any balance in quotas or receive your refund. For reference, the 2026 edition ran March 23 to May 29, 2026; each year's exact window is set by Receita Federal instruction.

The annual timeline

  • January–February: Gather your documents — income statements (informes de rendimentos) from employers, banks and brokers, receipts for deductible expenses (medical, education, private pension), and records of asset sales.
  • March–May: The filing window opens. Submit your DIRPF online before the deadline — late filing triggers a penalty (MAED) of 1% per month of delay on the tax due, capped at 20%, with a minimum of R$165.74 even if no tax is owed [figures per Receita Federal; re-check each year].
  • From May onward: Refund batches (lotes de restituição) are paid out in sequence through the year; taxpayers who file early and choose direct deposit generally get paid first. Any balance owed can be split into monthly quotas.

How to file, step by step

  1. Get your CPF and gov.br account. The CPF is your tax ID; a gov.br account (silver or gold level) unlocks the online services, including the pre-filled return.
  2. Choose your filing channel. Use the PGD (Programa Gerador da Declaração) desktop program, the "Meu Imposto de Renda" online portal, or the Receita Federal app — all on gov.br/receitafederal.
  3. Start from the pre-filled return (declaração pré-preenchida). With a gold or silver gov.br account, much of your income data is already filled in from employer and bank reports. Review every line — pre-filled data can contain errors or omissions.
  4. Pick simplified vs. itemized deductions. The program calculates both: the simplified option applies a standard discount, while itemized lets you deduct documented medical, education and dependent expenses. Take whichever gives the lower tax.
  5. Transmit and save your receipt. Submission is online via the program or Receitanet; keep the transmission receipt (recibo de entrega) — you need it for next year's pre-filled return and for any corrections.
  6. Pay or wait for your refund. A balance due can be paid in full or in monthly quotas via DARF; a refund arrives in the scheduled batches.

Who must file

Not everyone files. The Receita Federal publishes mandatory-filing criteria each year (obrigatoriedade) — they cover income above an annual threshold, capital gains on asset sales, stock-market activity, foreign assets, and several other situations. Check the current year's list on the Receita Federal site rather than assuming your income level alone decides it.

Frequently asked questions

Q: I arrived in Brazil mid-year. Do I file for the whole year?

A: You file as a resident for the period you were a tax resident. Income from before you became a resident is not part of the Brazilian return — foreign-source income received before you became a tax resident is not taxable in Brazil, per the Receita Federal's own guidance — confirm with a professional if you had significant pre-arrival income.

Q: Can I file if I don't speak Portuguese?

A: The filing program and portal are in Portuguese. Many expats use an accountant (contador) for their first return — a reasonable investment given the penalty for late or wrong filing.

Q: What happens if I miss the deadline?

A: You can still file late, but the MAED penalty applies automatically — 1% per month of delay on the tax due (capped at 20%, minimum R$165.74) [per Receita Federal guidance].

Q: I left Brazil this year. Do I still file?

A: If you completed the definitive-departure paperwork (Comunicação and Declaração de Saída Definitiva), that departure return covers your obligation. If you did not, you likely still owe a regular return — see our residency guide.
