Canada 2026 Federal Tax Brackets and Basic Personal Amount

The short answer

Two things changed for 2026 that affect every Canadian taxpayer: the lowest federal tax rate dropped to 14% for the full year, and all bracket thresholds were indexed upward by 2.0%. The Basic Personal Amount — the income you can earn before owing any federal tax — rose to $16,452 for most filers. Here are the exact 2026 figures, what changed from 2025, and a worked example.

The 2026 federal tax brackets

The Canada Revenue Agency indexed the 2026 federal brackets by 2.0%, based on the Consumer Price Index. The rates and thresholds for 2026 are:

Taxable incomeFederal rate
First $58,52314%
$58,523 to $117,04520.5%
$117,045 to $181,44026%
$181,440 to $258,48229%
Over $258,48233%

Only the lowest rate changed: it fell from the long-standing 15% to 14.5% for 2025 (the cut took effect mid-year, on July 1, 2025) and now sits at 14% for all of 2026. The other four rates — 20.5%, 26%, 29%, 33% — are unchanged.

For comparison, the 2025 thresholds were $57,375 / $114,750 / $177,882 / $253,414. Indexation moves the thresholds; it does not change the rates (except the legislated cut to the bottom rate).

The Basic Personal Amount for 2026

The Basic Personal Amount (BPA) is a non-refundable tax credit that shelters a slice of income from federal tax. For 2026:

  • Maximum BPA: $16,452 — available in full if your net income is $181,440 or less
  • Phase-out range: $181,440 to $258,482 — the enhanced portion shrinks linearly
  • Minimum BPA: $14,829 — the floor, available even at the highest incomes

The credit is calculated at the lowest federal rate (14% for 2026), so the maximum BPA is worth $16,452 × 14% = $2,303 in actual federal tax savings. At the floor, it is worth $14,829 × 14% = $2,076. Nobody's BPA goes to zero.

You claim the federal BPA on line 30000 of your T1 return. Your province or territory has its own separate BPA on the provincial return — the two are calculated independently.

Worked example: $75,000 of taxable income in 2026

Federal tax before credits:

  • 14% × $58,523 = $8,193
  • 20.5% × ($75,000 − $58,523) = 20.5% × $16,477 = $3,378
  • Gross federal tax: $11,571

Less BPA credit (full $16,452 available, since income is below $181,440):

  • $16,452 × 14% = $2,303

Net federal tax: $11,571 − $2,303 = $9,268 (before any other credits, and before provincial tax, which is calculated separately).

What newcomers should know

  • Indexation is automatic. Your employer's payroll withholding already reflects the 2026 thresholds — you don't need to file a new TD1 to get the benefit.
  • The BPA is not a refund. As a non-refundable credit, it can reduce your federal tax to zero but never below zero. If your income is under roughly $16,452, you owe no federal tax at all.
  • Newcomers get the full BPA for their year of arrival (it is not pro-rated), as long as they are Canadian tax residents.
  • Non-residents generally receive the BPA only if at least 90% of their worldwide income for the year was earned in Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 14% rate really for the whole of 2026?

Yes. The rate cut took effect July 1, 2025, which made 2025 a blended 14.5% year. For the 2026 tax year the 14% rate applies to the full twelve months, per the CRA's published 2026 payroll and indexation tables.

Do the provinces use the same brackets?

No. Each province and territory has its own brackets, rates, and BPA, layered on top of the federal calculation. The figures in this article are federal only — check your province's 2026 tables for the provincial side.

My income is $200,000. What is my BPA?

Your net income falls in the phase-out range ($181,440–$258,482), so your BPA is linearly reduced between $16,452 and $14,829. Roughly speaking, at $200,000 you keep most of the enhancement; the exact figure is calculated on Schedule 1 of your return.

Does indexation affect benefit amounts too?

Yes — the same 2.0% indexation factor adjusts many benefit and credit amounts (for example, the Canada Child Benefit thresholds). Benefit-specific articles on this site cover those separately.

Where do I confirm these numbers before filing?

The CRA publishes the official figures each year in its indexation notice and the T4032 payroll deductions tables. If any figure here differs from canada.ca, the CRA's version governs — check before you file.
