La réponse courte

The US midterm elections are on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. All 435 House seats and 35 of 100 Senate seats are on the ballot, along with governors and state/local offices depending on your state. This guide covers who can vote and how — written for newcomers.

Can you vote? The newcomer answer

Only US citizens aged 18 or older can vote in federal elections. Green card holders (permanent residents) cannot vote — and it is a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. Visa holders, DACA recipients, and other noncitizens also cannot vote.

If you recently naturalized, congratulations — you can vote. But you must register first; the US has no automatic voter registration in most states.

Registration: state by state

There is no national voter roll. Each state sets its own registration deadline, many falling in mid-to-late October 2026. Check your status and deadlines at vote.gov, the official US government portal, which routes you to your state's registration site. Some states allow same-day registration; many do not.

What's a midterm and why it matters

Midterms happen halfway through a presidential term. The entire House of Representatives (435 seats, 2-year terms) is re-elected, plus about a third of the Senate (35 seats, 6-year terms). Control of Congress — and which party sets the legislative agenda for the next two years — is decided here.

Key dates

  • State registration deadlines: mostly mid-to-late October 2026 (varies by state)
  • Election day: Tuesday, November 3, 2026
  • Early/absentee voting: available in most states; rules and windows vary

Questions fréquentes

I'm a green card holder. Can I vote?

No. Only US citizens can vote in federal elections. Voting as a noncitizen is a federal crime and can destroy any future immigration application.

I just naturalized. What now?

Register to vote through your state — start at vote.gov. Do it as early as possible; deadlines are strict.

Where do I check my registration?

vote.gov (official) routes you to your state's lookup tool.
