Reviewed 18 October 2026. Scope: Dubai RTA transport in the United Arab Emirates; other emirates and intercity services can have different ticket rules.
For a Dubai Metro journey, check the route and zones, prepare an appropriate nol product, and tap at both the entry and exit gates. RTA deducts the journey fare on exit. Check the balance before entering rather than discovering a problem at your destination. RTA Metro instructions
Plan a destination, not just a station
Start with the full building address and entrance. Save the destination name in text and identify the station exit that serves it. A station appearing close on a small map is not a door-to-door journey plan.
Write three lines: getting to the starting station, the rail journey, and the final walk or connecting service. If someone is meeting you, agree on an exit or clearly named public meeting point. Recheck this plan after changing accommodation or an appointment location.
Use zones to compare the whole journey
RTA divides Dubai into seven fare zones. The fare depends on the zones travelled, not simply the number of stations. RTA's transfer table allows a maximum journey duration of 180 minutes and up to three transfers, with no more than 30 minutes between transport modes. Other ticket and journey conditions still apply. RTA nol fare rules
| Planning question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Where do I begin and finish? | Stations or stops and their zones |
| Is there a connecting bus or tram? | Actual stop, route and expected transfer |
| Which product and cabin will I use? | Product conditions and permitted travel class |
| Is this a return outing? | Both directions and the time of the last useful connection |
Do not count a long lunch or sightseeing stop as a qualifying transfer without checking the conditions. Compare the total cost of the planned day with any pass you are considering; do not buy a larger product merely because it includes more zones.
A departure checklist
- Check RTA's current Metro timetable and route information before leaving.
- Confirm your nol product is valid for the intended journey and has sufficient balance or coverage.
- Keep the chosen card available for entry, exit and inspection.
- Read the station screens and carriage signs before boarding.
- For a late return, check the connection that gets you all the way back, not only the final train on one line.
Use the timetable and journey-planning links on RTA's Metro service page. This article deliberately does not promise a fixed fare, service interval or journey duration.
