Taiwan Visa-Free Entry: Who Qualifies and How It Works

The short answer

Taiwan grants visa-free entry to nationals of 60+ countries — most Western passport holders get up to 90 days with no advance paperwork beyond an online arrival card. But durations differ (90, 30, or 14 days), the list changes, and visa-free entry has hard limits on what you can do once inside. Here is the current picture.

The 90-day group

The largest group. Nationals of the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, and EU/EEA countries (plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and others) may stay up to 90 days without a visa. The full list covers 60+ nationalities — check the Bureau of Consular Affairs site before booking, because the list is updated periodically.

UK passport holders note: only passports where the nationality field reads "British Citizen" qualify.

The 30-day and 14-day groups

30 days: Singapore, Malaysia, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominican Republic, and others.

14 days: Oman, plus Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines on a trial basis (extended to July 31, 2026, with proof of accommodation and sufficient funds required for the trial nationalities).

Entry requirements (everyone)

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your entry date
  • Confirmed onward or return ticket
  • Completed Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online within 3 days before arrival
  • No prior immigration violations in Taiwan
  • Purpose must not require a permit: tourism, visiting friends/family, business meetings, exhibitions, international exchanges

Extending your stay

Visa-free stays can sometimes be extended at a National Immigration Agency (NIA) service center, but extensions are discretionary and not guaranteed. If you think you will need more than the visa-free period, apply for the appropriate visitor visa in advance instead of gambling on an extension.

Common issues and hard limits

  • No work. Visa-free entry does not authorize employment of any kind.
  • No conversion to residence (usually). You generally cannot switch from visa-free entry to a residence-based status from inside Taiwan — plan the right visa before you fly if you intend to stay long-term.
  • Overstays are punished. Overstaying leads to fines, detention, deportation, and future entry bans. The 90 days are generous; don't test the boundary.
  • The list changes. Countries are added and removed. Second-hand summaries (including this one) go stale — verify your nationality's current status on the Bureau of Consular Affairs website before booking.

On arrival: the first hour

Immigration will check your passport, onward ticket, and arrival card. Have your accommodation address ready — officers sometimes ask where you're staying. If you're pulled aside for secondary questioning, stay calm and answer consistently; it usually resolves in minutes. After clearing immigration, buy an EasyCard at the airport MRT station — it covers metro, buses, convenience stores, and even some taxis across Taiwan.

Extension vs. visa run: the honest math

If 90 days isn't enough, you have three options: (1) apply for an NIA extension before expiry (discretionary, one shot); (2) leave and re-enter for a fresh visa-free period (works occasionally, but back-to-back entries invite scrutiny and there's no guaranteed re-admission); (3) apply for the proper visitor or resident visa from the start. Option 3 is the only reliable one for stays beyond a few months — visa runs are a gamble, not a strategy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to apply for anything before flying?

No visa application, but you must complete the online Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) within 3 days before arrival. Some airlines check for it at check-in.

Can I do business meetings on visa-free entry?

Yes — meetings, conferences, exhibitions, and negotiations are permitted. Actually working (being employed, paid locally) is not.

Can I extend a 90-day visa-free stay?

Possibly, at NIA's discretion, by applying at a service center before your stay expires. It is not a right — apply early and have a backup plan.

What if my country isn't on the list?

Apply for a visitor visa at a Taipei Economic and Cultural Office before travel, or check whether you qualify for the eVisa program.

Does visa-free entry include multiple entries?

Each entry is assessed separately. Frequent back-to-back visa-free entries can draw scrutiny from immigration officers — they may question whether you are effectively living in Taiwan without residence status.

Can I work remotely for my foreign employer while visiting visa-free?

This is a legal gray area. Taiwan's digital-nomad-friendly stance is evolving, but visa-free entry technically does not authorize work of any kind — even for a foreign employer. Short "workation" trips are rarely pursued, but if remote work is your plan, look into Taiwan's dedicated digital nomad visa options rather than relying on visa-free entry.
