What documents does each Top Talent Pass category (A/B/C) need for renewal?

The short answer

It depends on your category and your renewal path. The three TTPS categories describe how you qualified; renewal is about what you've done since — employed, self-employed, or running a business. Each path needs a different document set, and submitting the wrong set for your situation is a fast track to rejection.

The three categories, briefly

CategoryWho qualified
AHigh earners (annual income at/above the threshold)
BGraduates of eligible world-leading universities with work experience
CRecent graduates of eligible universities (quota-capped)

Category determines your initial stay; renewal is judged on your Hong Kong footprint since arrival.

Document checklists by renewal path

Employed by a Hong Kong company:

  • Employment contract stating role, salary, and duties
  • Recent payslips (typically 3–6 months)
  • MPF contribution records
  • Employer's business registration and proof of operation
  • Salaries tax return / assessment

Self-employed / freelancer:

  • Business registration certificate
  • Client contracts and issued invoices
  • Bank statements showing business income
  • Profits tax filings

Entrepreneur (own company):

  • Certificate of incorporation and business registration
  • Office tenancy agreement
  • MPF records for yourself and any staff
  • Company bank statements and audited accounts if available

Renewal durations

Renewals are typically granted in patterns like 3 years, then 3 years, then 2 years toward the 7-year permanent residence mark — provided each renewal shows continued genuine employment or business activity. Gaps in MPF or long absences shorten what you get, or end it.

Timeline: when to start preparing

WhenAction
6 months before expiryDecide your renewal path (employed / self-employed / entrepreneur)
4–5 months beforeStart collecting: contracts, payslips, MPF records, tax filings
3 months beforeAsk your employer for the business-proof documents (they're slow)
4 weeks beforeSubmit the extension application

Immigration processes extensions in the weeks before expiry — applying absurdly early doesn't help, but arriving with gaps in your MPF record does hurt. The single most valuable habit: never let MPF contributions lapse, even between jobs (voluntary contributions exist for exactly this).

Frequently asked questions

Does my category affect what I can do at renewal?

Not directly — a Category A entrant can renew as an entrepreneur, and a Category C entrant can renew as an employee. What matters is the evidence for the path you choose.

I changed employers — is that a problem?

No, as long as the new employment is genuine and continuous. Keep the old contract, termination letter, and the new contract to show an unbroken chain.

Can I renew if I'm between jobs?

A short gap with active job hunting is explainable; a long gap with no Hong Kong ties is not. Don't let MPF contributions lapse if you can avoid it.
