The short answer
Short version: Milford Sound for the fjords, Rotorua for geothermal wonders and Māori culture, Queenstown for adventure, Tongariro for alpine hiking, the Bay of Islands for subtropical sailing, Hobbiton for film fans, the West Coast glaciers for ice, Abel Tasman for golden beaches, Waitomo for glowworms, and Aoraki/Mount Cook for the Southern Alps. Ten places, two islands, zero filler.
Milford Sound / Fiordland
The single most famous sight in NZ — a flooded glacial valley with waterfalls pouring off cliffs and Mitre Peak rising straight from the water. Cruise it in any weather; rain actually makes it more dramatic. Book cruises in peak season; parking at Milford Sound is very limited, so arrive early or consider a coach tour.
Rotorua
Geothermal Rotorua: geysers, bubbling mud pools and steaming valleys, plus the strongest Māori cultural experiences in the country — hāngī feasts, haka and carved meeting houses. It's touristy by NZ standards and worth every minute.
Queenstown & Wanaka
Queenstown is the adventure capital — bungy jumping was commercialised here, and jet boating, skydiving and skiing followed. Wanaka, an hour away, is the calmer sibling with a famous lakeside tree and easy access to Mount Aspiring. Both are at their busiest in winter (ski) and summer (hiking).
Tongariro National Park
Home to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a full-day hike past emerald lakes and active volcanic craters — widely rated one of the world's great day walks. Weather changes fast; check conditions and shuttle bookings before you go.
Bay of Islands
A subtropical archipelago in the far north made for sailing, dolphin cruises and lazy beach days. Russell, the country's first capital, and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds add the history layer — this is where modern NZ began.
Hobbiton (Matamata)
The permanent Hobbiton movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit — 44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn and gardens that are immaculate year-round. Tours run daily and sell out in peak season; book ahead.
Franz Josef & Fox glaciers
Two of the world's most accessible glaciers, descending from the Southern Alps almost to sea level. The classic experience is a guided heli-hike onto the ice; valley walks to the glacier terminals are free (check current access on the DOC website before you go).
Abel Tasman National Park
Golden-sand beaches, turquoise water and native bush along one of NZ's Great Walks — the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Walk the whole track over several days, or kayak and water-taxi between beaches for a single-day taste.
Waitomo glowworm caves
A silent boat ride through a cave lit by thousands of glowworms on the ceiling — one of NZ's most distinctive experiences. Combine with the Ruakuri or Aranui caves, or go further with black-water rafting if you're adventurous.
Aoraki / Mount Cook
NZ's highest peak anchors a national park of glaciers, turquoise lakes and big-sky alpine walks like the Hooker Valley Track. Some of the country's darkest skies make it a stargazing favourite too. The drive in past Lake Pukaki is half the experience.
Practical note
Stop at an i-SITE visitor centre in each town — the official local information network — for track conditions, bookings and honest advice. Peak-season (December–February) accommodation and tours book out; reserve ahead.
Frequently asked questions
Which island has more to see?
Roughly even: the North Island has Rotorua, Tongariro, Bay of Islands, Hobbiton and Waitomo; the South Island has Milford Sound, Queenstown, the glaciers, Abel Tasman and Aoraki/Mount Cook. See both if you can.
Can I see the highlights in a week?
You can skim one island in a week, but you'll spend it driving. Ten to fourteen days for both islands is the classic minimum — see the itinerary guide.
Are these places free?
National parks and many walks are free; guided experiences (Milford cruises, Hobbiton, glowworm boats, heli-hikes) are paid and priced for tourists — check each operator's website for current prices before you go.
