Taiwan Railway vs High-Speed Rail: How to Ride and Save
Taiwan has two rail systems that do different jobs: 台鐵 (TRA, Taiwan Railway) is the slow, scenic, island-wide network, and 高鐵 (THSR, Taiwan High Speed Rail) is the fast west-coast spine. Knowing which to take — and how to pay less — saves both time and money.
TRA (台鐵): the island loop
TRA circles the island and runs branch lines to places like Pingxi, Neiwan, Jiji, and Shalun. Train grades, fastest to slowest:
- 自強 (Tze-Chiang) — limited-stop express, including the new EMU3000 sets
- 莒光 (Chu-Kuang) — older express, cheaper
- 區間 (Local) — stops everywhere, cheapest
- Special named trains: 普悠瑪 (Puyuma) and 太魯閣 (Taroko) tilting trains — fast but reservation-only
Paying with an EasyCard: You can tap 悠遊卡 (EasyCard), 一卡通 (iPASS), icash, or HappyCash at any TRA station island-wide and just board — no ticket needed. Two catches: it doesn't work on tourist trains, group trains, Taroko, Puyuma, EMU3000 Tze-Chiang, business class, or family cars; and if you board a reserved-seating train with a tap-in, you don't get a seat assignment (you stand or take empty seats, and must yield them).
THSR (高鐵): the fast spine
The high-speed line runs down the west coast with 12 stations: Nangang, Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, and Zuoying (Kaohsiung). Taipei to Zuoying takes about 96 minutes.
Booking: use the official website (thsrc.com.tw), the T-EX App (mobile tickets with QR codes — no paper needed), station windows/machines, or convenience-store kiosks.
Saving money on the HSR
- Early-bird discounts (早鳥優惠): 65%, 80%, or 90% of the full fare on standard-class reserved seats when you book up to 28 days ahead. Book through the website, the T-EX App, or convenience stores — station windows and machines do NOT sell early-bird tickets. It's real-name: enter your ID or passport number (last 5 digits printed on the ticket), only the named traveler can ride, and you must carry matching ID or face a 50% penalty fare.
- Free seating (自由座): about 5% cheaper than a reserved seat. Sold only on the day of travel, at stations via the T-EX App, windows, or machines. On holidays the free-seating cars fill up — reserve if your schedule is fixed.
- EasyCard tap-in for HSR: holders of co-branded EasyCard/iPASS credit cards with auto-top-up enabled can tap straight through the gates into free-seating cars — no ticket purchase at all. Tap in AND tap out, or the system can't compute your fare.
Step-by-step: buying a ticket
HSR via T-EX App: pick stations and time → choose reserved or free seating → pay by card → get a QR ticket in the app → scan at the gate. For expense claims, the app can issue an electronic ticket certificate.
TRA long-distance: use the 台鐵e訂通 app or railway.gov.tw to reserve; pick up at station windows or machines. For local trains, just tap your EasyCard.
Which should I take? Taipei–Kaohsiung: HSR (~96 min) if time matters, TRA Tze-Chiang (~4–5 hrs, much cheaper) if you're sightseeing. East coast (Hualien, Taitung): TRA is the only rail option — book Puyuma/Taroko seats early on holidays.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a regular EasyCard on the HSR?
Only co-branded EasyCard/iPASS cards with auto-top-up enabled, and only for free-seating cars. A plain stored-value EasyCard won't open the gates.
Can foreigners buy early-bird tickets?
Yes — enter your passport number when booking. Bring the passport on travel day; the ticket is real-name and checked.
Can I tap my EasyCard on a Puyuma or Taroko train?
No. Those are excluded from e-ticket boarding, along with EMU3000 Tze-Chiang and tourist trains. Buy a reserved ticket or you'll be fined.
