Spain Student Visa to PR 2026: From Estancia por Estudios to Work Residence and Long-Term Stay

The short answer

Spain's student route is legally a "stay" (estancia), not residence — but it is one of the cheapest doors into the country, and the new immigration regulation (RD 1155/2024, in force May 2025) made the post-graduation switch to a work residence smoother. Here is the full path: study stay → work residence → EU long-term residence.

The student stay: what it is (and isn't)

The estancia por estudios covers stays over 90 days for full-time study, training, internships or volunteering. The consulates require: acceptance at an authorized teaching centre for a full-time programme, proof of financial means to cover the stay and the return trip, health insurance from an insurer authorized to operate in Spain, and — for stays over 180 days — a criminal record certificate from your countries of residence over the past 5 years. The commonly cited financial bar is 100% of the IPREM per month (€600/month in 2026).

The critical legal point: this is an estancia, not residencia. That distinction matters twice — it counts at only 50% of its duration toward the 5 years needed for EU long-term residence, and it does not count toward citizenship timelines. Plan your years with that discount in mind.

Working while studying

Students may work up to 30 hours per week, provided the work is compatible with their studies. The study programme must remain the main activity; any work is accessory to the stay, not a right in itself.

After graduation: switching to work residence

The strategic value of the student route is the switch. Under the new Reglamento de Extranjería (RD 1155/2024), graduates can apply from inside Spain to convert a study stay into a residence and work authorization without leaving the country — the graduate themselves can now file the request, and the prior job-market test no longer applies. Spain also provides a 12-month job-search visa/residence for graduates of Spanish institutions to find qualifying employment. The practical advice: start the paperwork before your student stay expires, because the switch is far easier from legal status than from an expired one.

The long game: counting years toward long-term residence

  • Study years count at half: two years of study equal one year on the 5-year larga duración UE clock.
  • Work-residence years count in full once you switch.
  • EU long-term residence needs 5 years of legal, continuous residence, with absences capped: no more than 6 months at a stretch, 10 months total within the 5 years, or 18 months total if the absences are work-related.

A realistic timeline: 2 years of master's study (counts as 1) + 4 years on work residence = 5 countable years → eligible for EU long-term residence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for the student visa from inside Spain as a tourist?

No — like other national visas, the study visa is issued by Spanish consulates abroad. Enter on the visa, then complete the in-Spain steps.

Does my family come with me on a student stay?

Family members can accompany a student, with their own means requirements (generally a percentage of the IPREM per member — confirm the current figures with the consulate).

Can I stay in Spain after my studies to look for work?

Spain provides a 12-month job-search residence for graduates of Spanish institutions; alternatively, convert directly to a work residence if you have an offer.

Do student years count toward Spanish citizenship?

No — only legal residencia counts toward the citizenship timelines; study stays are estancia.

Is the student route "easier" than a work visa?

The bar to enter is lower (no employer needed), but the years count at half toward long-term residence — it is a slower road to permanence.
