Southern Taiwan Attractions Guide / 南台湾景点推荐
Southern Taiwan is where Taiwan's history began and where its sunniest weather lives: Tainan's 400-year-old forts and temples, Kaohsiung's harbor renaissance, Chiayi's gateway to Alishan's sunrises, and Pingtung's Kenting beaches at the island's southern tip. Winters here are warm and dry, making it the perfect cold-weather escape.
Tainan
- Anping Old Fort (Fort Zeelandia) – The 17th-century Dutch fort where Taiwan's recorded history began, with the old banyan-tree warehouse next door.

- Garden Night Market (Huayuan) – Tainan's biggest night market, open Thursday/Saturday/Sunday; arrive hungry for the city's legendary snacks.
- Confucius Temple – Taiwan's oldest Confucian temple (1665), a serene complex of old banyans and red-brick halls.

- Eluanbi Lighthouse – At Taiwan's southernmost tip, with sweeping views where the Pacific meets the Taiwan Strait.
- Kenting Night Market (Kenting Main Street) – Bustling evening strip of seafood grills, Thai food, and beach-town energy.
- National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium – One of Asia's largest aquariums, with the famous beluga whale and coral kingdom tunnels.

- Maobitou Park – Wind-carved coral-reef headland with dramatic wave-cut platforms facing the strait.
Practical Tips
Best season: October to April is the sweet spot — warm, dry, and sunny while the north is damp and chilly. Summer (June–September) is Kenting's peak beach season but hot, with typhoon risk. Alishan is cool year-round; cherry blossoms bloom March–April. Transport: HSR to Zuoying (Kaohsiung) in about 1.5–2 hours from Taipei. Tainan is 45 minutes by TRA from Kaohsiung. Kenting Express buses run from Zuoying HSR station (about 2 hours). The Alishan Forest Railway and shuttle buses depart from Chiayi city and Chiayi HSR station.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is Tainan really Taiwan's food capital?
A: Locals and visitors consistently say so — danzai noodles, coffin toast, milkfish congee, and shrimp rolls all originated here. Plan at least one full day of eating, ideally guided by the night markets and old-street snack streets.
Q: Can I see Alishan sunrise without staying overnight?
A: It's difficult. The sunrise train departs Alishan station around 4–5 AM depending on the season, so staying one night in the recreation area (or at least in Chiayi/Fenqihu) is strongly recommended.
