Getting around New Zealand: public transport, buses and domestic flights

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. The short answer

Auckland and Wellington have genuinely usable public transport networks — AT with the AT HOP card in Auckland, Metlink with Snapper in Wellington. Between cities, InterCity coaches and domestic flights (Air New Zealand, Jetstar) do the heavy lifting. Everywhere else, a car is close to essential.

Auckland: AT and the AT HOP card

Auckland Transport (AT) runs the buses, trains and some ferries. Get an AT HOP card (a reusable smart card), load credit, and tag on when you board and tag off when you exit. HOP fares are cheaper than cash, contactless bank cards are also accepted, and the fare-zone system charges one fare for a whole journey even with transfers. Check current fares on the AT site before you budget.

Metlink runs Wellington's buses, trains and ferries, and Snapper is the stored-value card for buses and trains. Snapper fares are cheaper than cash and off-peak discounts apply automatically on eligible services — check current fares on the Metlink site.

Between cities: InterCity coaches

InterCity is NZ's largest national bus network, connecting more than 600 destinations with 130+ services a day, and the coaches have free WiFi. Book online in advance for the cheapest fares, and look at FlexiPass-style passes if you're doing a longer itinerary (check current pricing on the InterCity site).

Domestic flights

Air New Zealand and Jetstar cover the main trunk routes. Flying is the only sane option for the longest legs — Auckland to Queenstown is about two hours by air and a very long day by road. Fares move with demand; book ahead.

Driving on an overseas licence

You may drive on a valid overseas car licence for up to 18 months from your arrival date (a temporary policy in force since November 2024, reverting to 12 months on 1 November 2026); motorcycle and truck licences remain 12 months. After that you need a NZ licence (check NZTA for conversion details). Remember NZ drives on the left, and rural roads are often narrow and winding.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a car in Auckland or Wellington?

Not necessarily — both networks cover the main corridors well. Outside those two cities, a car makes daily life much easier.

Can I just tap my credit card instead of getting a transit card?

In Auckland, contactless credit/debit cards and phones work on AT services but you pay the standard adult fare. Wellington accepts contactless Visa/Mastercard too. The HOP/Snapper card still gets you the better fares and any concessions.

How do I get between the North and South Islands without flying?

The Cook Strait ferry sails Wellington–Picton carrying passengers, cars and campervans; book ahead in peak season.
