Reviewed 18 October 2026. Scope: Lisbon Airport and the Lisbon Metro, not every transport system in Portugal.
Plan the destination before choosing the payment method. Lisbon Airport has a Metro station, but your accommodation may require a change and a walk after the train. Start with the full address and the operator's current journey planner. The airport's transport page also points travellers toward onward rail at Oriente. Lisbon Airport transport
Make a three-part arrival note
Write down: airport to Metro station; Metro station to the correct street exit; exit to your accommodation. Save the address as text, not only as a map pin. Add a separate plan for a late arrival or a disruption. Compare routes by the number of changes and the final walk as well as the displayed train time.
For an onward journey beyond Lisbon, keep the airport transfer and the longer rail journey as separate checklist items. Confirm the actual departing railway station on your ticket rather than selecting a station only because its name looks familiar.
Card and ticket are different decisions
Metro accepts a valid ticket loaded on a navegante card or an eligible contactless bank card. A navegante occasional card is for one passenger per journey. Buying the card does not by itself mean you have bought the journey you need. Metro FAQ
| Your plan | What to compare before paying |
|---|---|
| One Metro journey | Current single-trip price and accepted payment method |
| Several trips in one day | Individual fares versus an applicable day ticket |
| Metro plus another operator | Exactly which networks the selected product covers |
| Travel with companions | A suitable separate ticket or payment method for each person |
Do the comparison using today's prices and your actual route list. A pass with more included networks is useful only if you will use them; do not treat every Lisbon transport product as interchangeable.
At the gates
For bank-card travel, use the same physical card, or the same selected virtual card on the same device, to enter and leave. A phone and the physical card linked to it are separate payment methods. Each traveller needs their own method; take the intended card out of the wallet to avoid presenting the wrong one. Metro contactless instructions
Pause to read the gate response. If entry fails, ask staff before repeatedly trying different cards. Keep the method used available until you have exited.
Frequently asked questions
Is the airport's travel-time estimate my door-to-door time?
No. Add time for leaving the terminal, buying or checking the ticket, changes and the final walk.
Does my Metro ticket include every bus or suburban train?
Check the specific product and operator. The physical card's name alone does not establish coverage.
What should I check on the travel day?
Use the Metro travel page for routes, operating information and accessibility links. Confirm any required lift status before relying on that route.
Independent planning information; fares, equipment availability and services can change. Confirm details with the operators before purchase.
This checkbox records your choice only on this device; it does not verify completion or notify anyone.
