Mobile and Broadband in the UK: A Newcomer's Guide

The short answer

Getting connected in the UK is cheap and fast, but the market is crowded and contracts have traps. The winning newcomer strategy: start with an inexpensive pay-as-you-go SIM on day one, then sort out home broadband once you have an address. Here is the landscape.

Mobile: PAYG vs contract

  • Pay-as-you-go / rolling 30-day SIM-only plans: no credit check, no commitment. Newcomer-friendly brands include giffgaff, VOXI (Vodafone's youth brand, where social-media data often does not count against your allowance), Lebara and Lyca Mobile (aimed at international callers, with cheap calls abroad), SMARTY (Three's value brand), and Tesco Mobile.
  • 12/24-month contracts: subsidised handsets or bigger data bundles, but they require a UK credit check, which is difficult for newcomers, and early-exit fees are steep.
  • The four physical networks are EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone; most budget brands ride on one of them, so check whose coverage is best at your postcode.

A rolling 30-day SIM-only plan, roughly 8 to 15 pounds a month for generous data (prices vary, treat as a rough guide), beats a contract for almost every newcomer in year one.

Keeping your number and switching

Thanks to Ofcom rules, switching is easy: text PAC to 65075 from your old UK number to get a Porting Authorisation Code, give it to your new provider, and your number moves, usually by the next working day. Never cancel the old contract before the number has ported.

Coverage and speed

Cities have excellent 4G/5G on all networks. Rural coverage and Underground (Tube) coverage vary, so check each network's postcode coverage checker before committing. 4G/5G coverage is now available across all Tube stations (the rollout finished at the end of 2024), though a few tunnels may still have gaps — check your network’s coverage checker.

Home broadband

  • Most homes connect via the Openreach network (used by BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Plusnet, Vodafone, and others), Virgin Media O2's own cable network, or, in many cities, CityFibre and other "altnets" offering full fibre through providers such as Vodafone, TalkTalk, and Zen.
  • "Fibre" usually means fibre-to-the-cabinet (speeds around 30 to 70 Mbps) unless it says full fibre / FTTP (100 Mbps to 1 Gbps+). For a flat share, 50 to 100 Mbps is plenty.
  • Contracts run 12 to 24 months with early termination charges, and prices typically rise each year mid-contract. Providers must state this upfront, so read the small print.
  • You will usually need your tenancy agreement and a UK bank account (for Direct Debit) to sign up; activation takes 1 to 3 weeks, so order as soon as you have a move-in date.

Comparing and complaining

Use Ofcom-accredited comparison sites for impartial comparisons, and always run the provider's availability checker with your exact postcode, because advertised "up to" speeds mean little. If the service fails, complain to the provider first, then escalate free of charge to the Communications Ombudsman (or CISAS).

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a UK SIM before I arrive?

Yes. giffgaff and some others ship SIMs internationally for free, and eSIMs can be bought online. Having a working UK number on landing day makes everything (banking, renting, two-factor codes) easier.

Which is cheapest for calling home internationally?

Lebara and Lyca Mobile traditionally offer the cheapest international minutes; alternatively, a data-heavy plan plus WhatsApp or WeChat calls is usually cheapest of all.

Do I need ID to buy a SIM?

PAYG SIMs need no ID. Buy at any supermarket, corner shop, or online. Contracts need ID, proof of address, and a credit check.

What is the difference between "fibre" and "full fibre"?

"Fibre" (FTTC) is fibre to the street cabinet with copper to your home, which is fine for most use. "Full fibre" (FTTP) runs fibre all the way into your home, which is faster and more reliable. Adverts must now distinguish the two clearly.

Can I get broadband without a long contract?

Yes. Several providers offer 30-day rolling or 12-month options (often via Openreach resellers), usually at a higher monthly price. Useful if your tenancy is short.
