The short answer
Short answer: 65 is the minimum score to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect — not a promise of an invitation. For the popular independent 189 visa, 65 points almost never gets invited in 2026; competitive scores run 80–95+ for most occupations.
What 65 points actually means
SkillSelect ranks every EOI by points, highest first. When two EOIs have the same score, the earlier date of effect (when the EOI reached that score) wins the tie-break. A 65-point EOI simply enters the queue — it tells you nothing about when, or whether, an invitation arrives.
The 2026 reality: invitation rounds
Home Affairs publishes results after each invitation round, and they show how occupation-dependent this is. In the June 4, 2026 round, 10,000 invitations were issued for the subclass 189 — but cut-offs ranged from 65 points for some trades occupations to 110 points for ICT occupations. The takeaway: a nurse or tradesperson at 70–75 may be invited quickly, while an ICT professional or accountant at 85 may still be waiting.
190 vs 491: the nomination boost
Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) — no nomination, no bonus points. Purely points-ranked, so it demands the highest scores.
Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) — adds +5 points from state nomination. Competitive EOI scores run roughly 65–85 including the bonus — but each state runs its own occupation lists and extra criteria (residency, work experience, registration of interest), so eligibility is not automatic.
Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional) — adds +15 points from regional nomination. Competitive scores run roughly 65–75; in exchange you must live and work in a designated regional area, with a pathway to the 191 permanent visa.
How to raise your score
English is the biggest lever. Proficient English = 10 points, Superior English = 20 points. Re-sitting PTE or IELTS is usually the cheapest 10–20 points available.
Partner points. A skilled partner (positive skills assessment + competent English) = 10 points; a partner with competent English only = 5 points; single applicants = 10 points.
State or regional nomination — the +5 (190) or +15 (491) described above.
Everything else: age band, Australian study requirement, regional study, Professional Year, NAATI/CCL credential, and skilled work experience (Australian and overseas).
Frequently asked questions
Does 65 points guarantee an invitation?
No. It only makes your EOI eligible for consideration. Invitations go to the highest-ranked EOIs in each round, per occupation.
How does the date-of-effect tie-break work?
If ten people sit at 85 points and only five invitations are available for that occupation, the five with the earliest date of effect are invited. Updating your EOI to a higher score resets the date — but a higher score with a later date still beats a lower score with an earlier one.
Can I lodge more than one EOI?
Yes — commonly one for the 189 and separate ones for 190/491 nominations. Keep each updated; an EOI expires after two years.
Do 190 invitations follow the same rounds as 189?
No. States and territories nominate on their own schedules with their own criteria — a 190 invitation can arrive any time, independent of the federal rounds.
Should I claim partner points if I'm not sure we qualify?
Only claim what you can evidence at invitation time. Overclaiming points you can't prove is one of the most common reasons for visa refusal.
