First Bank Card in Spain as a Newcomer: NIE, Bank Cards and the CIRBE

⚠️ Disclaimer: For general information only — not tax, financial, legal, or medical advice. Figures may be outdated or incorrect; tax rules change frequently. Verify important decisions with the CRA/IRS or a qualified professional (for health topics, a licensed healthcare provider). You use this information at your own risk.
The short answer

In Spain, most banks want to see your NIE (foreigner identity number) before issuing a card, and the standard newcomer product is a debit card (tarjeta de débito), with a basic credit card (tarjeta de crédito) once you can show income. The big banks — BBVA, Santander and CaixaBank — all onboard foreigners with a passport plus NIE. Spain has no US-style credit score, but the Banco de España runs the CIRBE risk register.

Step one: the NIE

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the foreigner identity number that anchors almost every administrative step in Spain, including banking. Banks use it to identify you for tax reporting and account records, so it is the single most important document for getting a card. Some banks let you start the process with a passport alone, but expect the NIE to be required before the account is fully active.

First card options at the big banks

Mentioned by name only — no application links. Compare the current tariffs on each bank's own site before choosing:

BankNewcomer card / accountAnnual feeRequirements
BBVAOnline account + debit cardNo-fee online account advertised; card fee varies by account type — check bbva.esPassport + NIE
SantanderCuenta Online + debit/credit cardFees vary by account type — check santander.esPassport + NIE; income proof for credit cards
CaixaBankCuenta imagin / debit cardFees vary by account type — check caixabank.esPassport + NIE; income proof for credit cards

Credit cards (tarjetas de crédito) generally require proof of income and Spanish residence; as a fresh arrival you will usually start with a tarjeta de débito, which works everywhere in Spain and online.

Spain's credit system: the CIRBE, not a score

Spain has no single national credit score. What lenders consult is the CIRBE (Central de Información de Riesgos del Banco de España):

  • The CIRBE is the Banco de España's risk register. Banks declare your loans, credits, guarantees and other risks to it, operation by operation.
  • Any individual or company can request their own risk report free of charge: online through the Banco de España's electronic office (needs a digital certificate or Cl@ve), in person at a Banco de España branch by appointment, or by post.
  • The report shows your risks aggregated by type; you get detailed per-operation, per-bank data when your total risk with one bank exceeds €1,000.

As a newcomer you will simply have no CIRBE record yet — which is neutral, not negative.

Traps to avoid

  • Cuota anual / comisión de mantenimiento: annual card fees and account maintenance fees vary widely between banks and account types. The cheapest headline account can become expensive once cards are added — read the tariff sheet.
  • Foreign-transaction fees: non-euro spending usually carries a markup. If you travel or shop abroad often, compare cards on this point.
  • ATM fees at other banks' machines: withdrawing cash from another bank's ATM (cajero de otra entidad) can trigger a commission.
  • Tarjeta prepago (prepaid card): fine for budgeting, but it is not a bank card and does nothing for your banking record.
  • Don't chase credit to "build a score": Spain has no score to build. Signing credit products you don't need only adds risk entries to the CIRBE.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I get a bank card before my NIE arrives?

A: Usually not a full account. Most banks require the NIE to open and activate an account; some let you begin the paperwork with a passport. Get the NIE appointment early — it unlocks banking, work contracts and the health system.

Q: Does Spain have a credit score?

A: No. There is no FICO-style score. Banks check the CIRBE register (loans, credits, guarantees reported by banks) and their own internal criteria when you apply for credit.

Q: How do I request my CIRBE report?

A: Free of charge through the Banco de España's electronic office with a digital certificate or Cl@ve, in person at a Banco de España office by prior appointment, or by post to the Central de Información de Riesgos in Madrid. Online requests are normally ready within minutes.

Q: Debit or credit card — which should a newcomer choose?

A: Start with a tarjeta de débito. It works for shops, ATMs and online payments across Spain, has no interest risk, and is what banks issue most readily to newcomers. Add a credit card later once you have steady income.

Q: Can I open an account online with just my passport?

A: Some banks allow a fully online application, but identity verification almost always ends at passport plus NIE. Without a NIE, expect the process to stall — get the NIE first, then open the account.
