The short answer

Reviewed 18 October 2026. Scope: occasional domestic public-transport travel, with NS train rules identified separately.

For a simple NS journey, an accepted contactless payment card can be your travel credential: check in and out with the same physical card, or the same selected virtual card on the same device. No advance registration is required. NS currently treats payment-card travel as second class without a discount; a subscription or special ticket needs its own instructions. NS payment-card guide

Choose one way to pay for this journey

Before leaving, decide whether you will use a physical bank card, its mobile-wallet version, or a separately purchased ticket. Put that choice in your travel note. This small step helps prevent mixing two payment methods at different gates.

A phone and the physical card attached to the same bank account are treated separately. Each traveller needs their own suitable travel credential. Foreign cards have acceptance exceptions, so check your specific card rather than assuming every Visa or Mastercard will work. NS card FAQ

This is a planning worksheet, not a statement that all operators sell the same products. Use the current NS journey planner for an NS route and follow any displayed supplement or service instruction. A cheap-looking journey is not equivalent if its ticket conditions differ.

When a gate or charge is confusing

Do not keep tapping a second card to “fix” the first. Read the display and ask staff to identify what happened. For a missing check-out, use the official OVpay journey overview linked from NS and follow the correction process for that journey. Do not assume a charge disappears automatically.

Keep payment references, booking codes and screenshots private. You can record the journey date, start and end stations and the payment method's nickname without posting a full card number online. A travel companion only needs the meeting place and time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account just to try OVpay?

NS says advance registration is unnecessary for accepted payment-card travel. An account and journey-history features are separate choices.

Can I switch from my phone to the linked card on arrival?

Use the same physical card, or keep the same virtual card selected on the same device, throughout the journey.

Is contactless always the lowest fare?

No such promise follows from convenience. Compare applicable tickets, discounts and supplements before travel.

Is this a ticket for international trains?

This guide covers domestic use. Follow the international operator's booking and travel conditions separately.

Independent information, not a fare quotation or guarantee of card acceptance. Recheck operator instructions before travelling.
