Mexico luggage guide: checked and carry-on rules for Aeroméxico, Volaris and Viva Aerobus
Mexico's three main airlines sell baggage very differently. Aeroméxico includes checked bags on mid-tier fares; Volaris and Viva Aerobus are low-cost carriers where cheap fares include little or no checked baggage. On every airline, buying baggage online before your flight costs far less than at the airport.
What are the checked baggage allowances?
| Airline | Economy checked allowance | Max per piece | Size limit (L+W+H) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aeroméxico (domestic) | Up to 25kg per piece, included depending on fare (Basic: buy; Classic/Plus/Premier: included) | 32kg | 158cm |
| Volaris (Básica) | 1 piece up to 15kg + personal item | 25kg per piece (up to 45kg with overweight fees) | 158cm |
| Volaris (Plus) | 1 piece up to 25kg + carry-on + personal item | 25kg per piece | 158cm |
| Viva Aerobus (Extra/Smart) | 1st checked bag included: up to 15kg (Extra) or 25kg (Smart) | 32kg | 158cm |
| Viva Aerobus (Zero/Light) | None included — buy in 15/20/25kg tiers | 32kg | 158cm |
Key details from the airlines' own pages:
- Aeroméxico: checked pieces may weigh up to 25kg each with 158cm linear dimensions, depending on the fare family. Basic fares do not include checked baggage — you buy a 25kg piece separately. Classic, AM Plus and Premier fares include at least one piece. Carry-on (equipaje de mano) must not exceed 55 × 40 × 25cm; the personal item should be no larger than 45 × 35 × 20cm and around 3kg.
- Volaris: the Básica fare includes one checked bag of up to 15kg plus a personal item — notably, no overhead carry-on is included on Básica. The Plus fare includes a 25kg checked bag, a carry-on, and a personal item with a combined cabin weight of up to 20kg. Stand-alone checked bags bought separately allow up to 25kg per piece. Everything is capped at 158cm linear.
- Viva Aerobus: baggage is sold by weight. The Extra combo includes a first checked bag up to 15kg; the Smart combo includes one up to 25kg. Zero and Light fares include only a personal item (Light adds a carry-on). Checked pieces must not exceed 158cm linear or 32kg absolute maximum.
The single most expensive mistake on all three airlines is showing up at the counter with undeclared baggage. Add checked bags during booking or in "Mis viajes / Manage booking" online — airport prices are a multiple of online prices.
What are the carry-on rules?
- Aeroméxico: personal item plus carry-on (55 × 40 × 25cm); combined cabin weight up to 10kg on Basic fares, 15kg on Classic and Flex.
- Volaris: carry-on max 55 × 40 × 25cm; on Plus fares the personal item and carry-on share a 20kg combined limit (carry-on itself max 10kg). Básica includes only a personal item.
- Viva Aerobus: carry-on 55 × 40 × 25cm, up to 10kg on most fares (up to 15kg on higher bundles); personal item 45 × 35 × 20cm. Not included on the Zero fare.
Gate sizers are enforced, especially on Volaris and Viva Aerobus. If your bag does not fit the sizer, it goes in the hold at airport rates.
Hard case vs. soft case: which should I buy?
Hard-shell (polycarbonate/ABS) cases handle checked baggage better — they protect against rough handling on the ramp and keep contents dry in tropical downpours. Best if you check bags regularly, carry fragile items (pottery, mezcal bottles), or fly connecting itineraries. Downsides: heavier when empty, rigid shape, visible scuffs.
Soft-shell (nylon/polyester) cases are lighter and expand when you overpack — useful on the return leg with market purchases. The outside pockets are handy for documents and a water bottle. Best for carry-on-only travel and light packers. Downsides: less protection, zippers are the weak point, water-resistant rather than waterproof.
For Mexico travel, a common setup is a 55cm hard-shell cabin case (exactly 55 × 40 × 25cm for the low-cost carriers) plus a 70cm checked case for longer trips. If you fly Volaris Básica often, note it includes no overhead carry-on — a bag that fits under the seat as your "personal item" may be more useful than a standard cabin case.
What backpack type works best for Mexico travel?
- Carry-on travel backpacks (40–50L, front-opening): the one-bag option for multi-city Mexico trips — pack like a suitcase, carry on your back through bus stations and colonial-town cobblestones where wheels suffer.
- Day packs (20–35L): the best "personal item" for low-cost fares, and your daily bag for ruins, markets, and beach towns.
- Anti-theft urban backpacks: worth considering for Mexico City metro and crowded markets — lockable zippers and a cut-resistant strap cost little extra.
Pack a foldable daypack (under 20L, stuffs into its own pocket) inside your main bag for side trips — it weighs almost nothing and saves you carrying the big pack to Teotihuacán or a cenote.
Packing cubes, compression bags and space tricks
Packing cubes and compression bags are sold on Amazon and in Mexican department stores — as plain text mentions go, no link needed. Cubes organise; compression bags shrink volume. For Mexico's varied climate (hot coast, cool highlands), the winning combination is:
- Roll, don't fold casual clothes — roughly 20–30% more fits in the same cube.
- Layer for altitude: Mexico City and highland towns get cold at night. One packable down jacket in a compression bag beats three sweaters.
- Wear the bulkiest items on the plane: boots, jeans, jacket.
- Decant toiletries into 100ml bottles — full-size bottles are dead weight, and liquids rules apply to carry-on anyway.
- Laundry, not luggage: lavanderías are cheap and fast in every Mexican city; pack for half the trip and wash once.
Frequently asked questions
How much checked baggage can I take on Volaris?
It depends on your fare. Básica includes one checked bag up to 15kg plus a personal item (no overhead carry-on). Plus includes one checked bag up to 25kg plus a carry-on, with a 20kg combined cabin limit. You can buy additional checked bags online in 15–25kg tiers, each within 158cm linear. Always buy before the airport — counter prices are much higher.
Is it cheaper to buy Viva Aerobus baggage online or at the airport?
Online, by a wide margin. Add baggage during booking or later in "Mi vuelo" — airport purchases cost significantly more per bag and per overweight kilo. If you think you might need the weight, the Extra or Smart combo (which includes a checked bag) is often cheaper than a Zero fare plus a separately bought bag.
Does Aeroméxico include checked baggage on the cheapest fare?
No. The Basic (Básica) fare includes only cabin baggage; checked bags are bought separately (a 25kg piece). Classic, AM Plus and Premier fares include at least one checked piece up to 25kg. Check the fare family column before you click buy — the "cheapest" fare plus a bag often costs more than Classic.
Will a 158cm suitcase work on all three airlines?
Yes — 158cm linear (length + width + height, including wheels and handles) is the industry standard for checked bags and matches all three airlines' limits. The catch is weight: 15kg on Volaris Básica, 25kg on higher tiers and Aeroméxico — so weigh your packed bag, not just measure it.
Are packing cubes worth it?
Yes for multi-stop trips. They don't reduce weight, but they let you live out of a suitcase across five hotels without repacking chaos. Pair them with one compression bag for the bulky jacket, and you're set for coast-to-highlands itineraries.
