Liaoning Attraction Guide
Liaoning is where China's northeast shows its full range: an imperial palace older than Beijing's Forbidden City, one of the country's most liveable seaside cities, a boat ride through a flooded limestone cave, and a broken bridge that ends mid-river at the North Korean border. Most travellers can cover the highlights in 4–6 days by high-speed rail, using Shenyang as the base and branching out to Dalian, Benxi–Anshan, and Dandong.
Shenyang
- Shenyang Imperial Palace (Mukden Palace, 沈阳故宫) — Built in 1625 as the palace of Nurhaci, founder of the Later Jin (the state that became the Qing dynasty), and expanded by his son Huang Taiji; one of only two complete imperial palace complexes in China, inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 as part of the Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
- Allow half a day for the East, Middle, and West routes through the palace, including the octagonal Dazheng Hall where the khan held court and the Chongzheng Hall throne room.
Dalian
- Xinghai Square (星海广场) — One of the largest city squares in the world, a seaside expanse of over a million square metres built for the 1997 Hong Kong handover centenary, anchored by a 19.97-metre white marble huabiao pillar; come at dusk for the music fountains and views across Xinghai Bay Bridge.
- Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park (老虎滩海洋公园) — A 5A-rated ocean park on Dalian's southern shore combining the Polar Region Animal Museum, a coral reef museum, the Bird Language Forest aviary, and sea-lion and dolphin shows; the clifftop setting above the Yellow Sea is half the attraction.
Benxi & Anshan
- Benxi Water Cave (本溪水洞) — One of the world's longest navigable underground rivers: a 40-minute boat ride through vast stalactite chambers on water that stays around 10°C year-round, so it is cool in summer and misty-warm in winter.
- Qianshan (千山, Anshan) — "Thousand Mountains," a granite peak forest dotted with Ming-dynasty temples including Longquan Temple and Wuliang Temple; famous for spring blossoms, summer shade, and the Wufoding (Five Buddhas Peak) summit ridge.
Dandong
- Yalu River Broken Bridge (鸭绿江断桥) — The half-bridge built by Japan in 1911 and bombed by US aircraft in 1950, its twisted steel trusses ending mid-river a few hundred metres from the North Korean bank; the attached memorial hall documents the Korean War from the Chinese perspective.
- Walk to the broken end at sunset for the closest legal view of the North Korean town of Sinuiju across the water.
Practical Tips
Best season: May–June and September–October are ideal for Shenyang, Qianshan, and the Benxi Water Cave. Dalian's beaches are best July–September. Winter (December–February) brings ice activities on the Yalu River and cheaper hotel rates, but temperatures can drop below −15°C in Shenyang and Dandong.
Transport: Shenyang is the high-speed rail hub: Shenyang–Dalian in about 1.5 hours, Shenyang–Dandong in about 1.5 hours, and Shenyang–Benxi in about 30 minutes. Dalian's metro reaches Xinghai Square and Laohutan directly. In Dandong, the Broken Bridge is a short taxi ride or bus trip from the railway station.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do Shenyang and Dalian in one weekend?
Yes, barely: take the Friday-evening high-speed train to one city, spend Saturday there, move to the other city Saturday night, and return Sunday evening. It is rushed; three days is far more comfortable.
Is the Yalu River Broken Bridge worth the trip to Dandong?
If you are interested in modern history, absolutely — standing on a bridge bombed in 1950, looking across at North Korea, is unlike anything else in China. Pair it with Hushan Great Wall (the eastern end of the Ming Great Wall) for a full day.
