Check the exact terminal before arranging your transfer. Kenya Railways identifies Nairobi Terminus in the Syokimau area and Mombasa Terminus in Miritini. Do not treat a city-centre railway station, an airport and the SGR terminal as the same destination. Kenya Railways station and connection information
Book the journey in three parts
Think of the trip as access to the terminal, the train itself, and onward travel after arrival. Write down each part separately. The railway ticket confirms only what its own conditions include; an accommodation transfer or local connection should be checked independently.
Use the official Madaraka Express booking site to check the chosen date, train type, origin and destination. Review the actual result and current terms before payment. An old timetable image or a search-engine snippet does not establish available seats or today's departure.
| Part of the trip | Details to save |
|---|---|
| Getting to the terminal | Exact station name, pickup location and travel buffer |
| Boarding | Departure date, time, ticket and current document instructions |
| Train journey | Booked origin, destination and travel class |
| After arrival | Meeting point, onward transport and a fallback contact |
Ask a driver or host to confirm the terminal name in writing. Sharing an exact meeting point is more useful than saying only “the Nairobi station.” Keep booking codes and identity-document details out of public posts.
Work backwards from boarding
Kenya Railways' FAQ encourages arrival at least 60 minutes before departure and states that platform gates close 10 minutes before departure. Treat those as operator instructions to recheck, not as a guarantee that arriving at the last minute will work. Madaraka Express FAQ
Make your own departure plan using the reporting time, your transfer estimate and a buffer for uncertainty. If arriving from a flight, do not start the ground-transfer clock at scheduled touchdown: leaving the terminal and collecting baggage also take time. No universal connection buffer suits every itinerary.
Before leaving, open the actual ticket, check your passenger details against the operator's document requirements and confirm that your chosen display or print format is accepted. Save the operator's contact route privately.
Frequently asked questions
Does a booking guarantee my separate city transfer?
Only the services explicitly included in the booking are covered. Verify other transport separately.
Can I rely on an old cancellation rule?
Read the terms shown for your current product before paying. Do not assume every class or sales channel has identical change conditions.
What if I cannot confirm the onward connection?
Resolve that gap before committing to a tight itinerary. Ask the operator about the specific date and station rather than relying on a general blog schedule.
