Kansas Attractions Guide
Kansas rewards travelers who look past the "flyover state" label. The Sunflower State pairs authentic Wild West history β Dodge City's Boot Hill, Wichita's cowtown roots β with natural wonders found nowhere else: the last great sweep of tallgrass prairie and the chalk spires of Monument Rocks. Kansas City, Kansas anchors the east with pro sports and outlet shopping, while Wichita delivers one of America's top zoos. Here are the must-sees, region by region.
Kansas City, KS
The Kansas side of the metro, built around the speedway district's sports and shopping.
- Legends Outlets Kansas City β Open-air outlet center with 100+ stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues next to the speedway.
- Children's Mercy Park β Home of Sporting Kansas City (MLS); catch a match or book a stadium tour.

Tallgrass Prairie
The Flint Hills hold one of the last expanses of tallgrass prairie on Earth.

Monument Rocks
Western Kansas hides some of the strangest geology in the Midwest.

- Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park β Kansas's newest state park (opened 2019), protecting 100-foot Niobrara chalk spires; day-use only, stay on marked trails.
- Castle Rock β A second dramatic chalk badlands formation about 30 miles east of Monument Rocks.
- Fick Fossil and History Museum β An Oakley museum displaying fossils pulled from the chalk beds, including a giant mosasaur.
Practical Tips
Best season to visit: Late spring (wildflowers, mild weather) and early fall are ideal. Summers are hot, but prairie sunsets are spectacular year-round.
Getting around: A car is essential β attractions are spread across the state. Fly into Kansas City International (MCI) or Wichita's Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT).
Remote stops: Monument Rocks and Little Jerusalem have no services and weak cell signal β bring water, fill the tank, and skip the gravel roads after heavy rain.
Frequently asked questions
Is Schlitterbahn Kansas City still open?
No. The water park closed permanently in September 2018 following the 2016 VerrΓΌckt slide accident, and the site was demolished in 2021. The closest alternative for water-park fun is Oceans of Fun on the Missouri side of Kansas City.
How many days do I need for Kansas?
Four to five days works well: one day in Kansas City, KS, one in Wichita, one for Dodge City, and one for the Tallgrass Prairie and Flint Hills. Monument Rocks fits as a detour on a western Kansas road trip.
