For a first arrival in Tokyo, start with the airport code and your accommodation's nearest station. Compare the complete journey, including the final transfer and walk. A train advertised as fast to one central station may still leave you far from your destination.

Haneda and Narita need different plans
At Haneda, the Keikyu railway connects towards Shinagawa and the Tokyo Monorail towards Hamamatsucho. These are useful starting points for a route search, not interchangeable tickets. JNTO Haneda access guide.
Narita has JR and Keisei rail options. Terminal 1 uses Narita Airport Station; Terminals 2 and 3 use Airport Terminal 2・3 Station. Match the departure station to your actual terminal before comparing trains. Narita rail access.
Write HND or NRT beside the flight number in your arrival notes. If the return flight uses another airport, create a separate return plan rather than reversing your arrival itinerary.
Build two door-to-door options
Use the Narita airport journey planner when arriving there: it accepts a terminal, destination, date and time. Enter when you expect to reach public transport, allowing your own margin after the flight, rather than treating the scheduled landing time as a train departure.
| Decision | What to write in your notes |
|---|---|
| Exact destination | Station name, hotel entrance and address in Japanese |
| Rail choice | Operator, service name, transfers and ticket conditions |
| Bus alternative | Actual stop and the remaining walk to your accommodation |
| Total cost | Every transport leg, reservation charge and any luggage charge |
| Late arrival | Last workable connection and a separately priced fallback |
These fields are a comparison worksheet, not a ranking of providers. Check the complete fare shown for the service you select; do not assume that a familiar transit card replaces every ticket or reservation.
Make the station exit part of the plan
A route ending at a large station is unfinished. Save the accommodation entrance, proposed exit and walking route offline. If stairs or a long walk would be difficult with your bags, check the station's accessible route before choosing the cheapest-looking itinerary.
For a late landing, compare the final onward connection as carefully as the airport train. If a delay removes the connection, recalculate the whole journey. A train reaching a city station does not by itself solve the remaining trip.
Frequently asked questions
Should I buy a rail pass for the airport journey?
Compare the pass's current coverage and conditions with the individual trips you actually plan. Do not add distant excursions merely to make a pass appear worthwhile.
What should I keep available without mobile data?
Save your booking reference, accommodation address, route notes and official transport links. Keep a readable copy outside a single app, and do not share screenshots containing passport or payment details.
Does this guide guarantee a connection?
No. It provides a planning method. Live timetables, disruptions, ticket conditions and your arrival circumstances determine what is usable.
