The short answer
This is the tried-and-tested first-visit circuit: 14 days covering Cape Town and the Winelands, the Garden Route drive, and a Kruger safari — the three experiences that define a South Africa trip. Fly into Cape Town, out of Johannesburg (or Nelspruit/Kruger Mpumalanga airport) to avoid backtracking.
Days 1–4: Cape Town
Day 1: arrive, V&A Waterfront, sunset harbour cruise.
Day 2: Table Mountain (morning, before the cloud), city centre, Bo-Kaap, Company's Garden.
Day 3: Cape Peninsula — Chapman's Peak drive, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach penguins, Simon's Town.
Day 4: Robben Island (morning ferry, book ahead) + Zeitz MOCAA in the afternoon.
Days 5–6: Cape Winelands
Base in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. Wine tram in Franschhoek, tastings in Stellenbosch, dinner at one of the region's renowned restaurants.
Optional day trip to Hermanus (whale season June–November) if you have a spare day.
Days 7–9: Garden Route
Pick up the rental car. Day 7: drive to Knysna via Hermanus/Swellendam; oysters on the lagoon.
Day 8: Plettenberg Bay — beaches, monkeyland/bird sanctuaries, or sea kayaking.
Day 9: Storms River Mouth (Tsitsikamma) — suspension bridge hike, optional Bloukrans bungee en route.
Days 10–11: Fly to the safari
Fly Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) → Johannesburg → Kruger area (or drive if you have time). Overnight near the park; many lodges include transfers.
Alternatively, fly straight to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and self-drive into the park's southern gates.
Days 12–14: Kruger safari
Two full days minimum in the park: one self-drive day, one guided morning + evening game drive — guides find far more.
Stay inside the park (rest camps like Skukuza, Satara, Lower Sabie — book months ahead) or at a private lodge on the western boundary.
Day 14: morning game drive, then fly out of Kruger/Johannesburg.
Practical notes
Driving: left-hand traffic; Garden Route roads are excellent. Avoid night driving outside towns.
Packing: layers — Cape Town summer evenings cool down; Kruger winter mornings (May–Sep) are cold on open vehicles.
Malaria: Kruger is a low-to-moderate malaria zone — prophylaxis recommended (general travel info, not medical advice).
Frequently asked questions
Can I do it in 10 days?
Yes, but cut the Garden Route to 2 days and Kruger to 2 — it becomes rushed. 14 days is the comfortable minimum for all three regions.
Self-drive safari or guided?
Do both: self-drive gives freedom and is cheap; guided drives (especially night drives, which self-drivers cannot do) find far more wildlife.
Is one-way car rental expensive?
One-way fees apply between cities — get quotes from the major rental firms. Many travellers drive the Garden Route one-way and fly the long legs.
What about the Panorama Route?
If you have 2 extra days, add it before Kruger: Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes — spectacular and on the way.
