The short answer
The classic first-timer loop runs Auckland → Rotorua → Taupō/Tongariro → Wellington → (Cook Strait ferry) → Picton → Kaikōura → Christchurch → Aoraki/Mount Cook → Queenstown/Wanaka → Milford Sound → Franz Josef → Abel Tasman. Give it 10–14 days minimum — NZ looks small on a map, but driving distances are long and the roads are winding, so do not try to rush it.
The route, day by day
Days 1–2: Auckland. Recover from the flight, see the harbour, take a ferry to Waiheke Island or Rangitoto if time allows.
Days 3–4: Rotorua. Geothermal valleys and Māori cultural experiences; detour via Hobbiton (Matamata) on the way down — book Hobbiton ahead.
Day 5: Taupō / Tongariro. Lake Taupō, or the Tongariro Alpine Crossing if you're fit and the weather cooperates — check conditions and shuttles.
Day 6: Wellington. The compact capital: Te Papa museum, the cable car, coffee and craft beer. Pick up the Cook Strait ferry to Picton in the evening or next morning — book vehicle space ahead in peak season.
Day 7: Picton → Kaikōura → Christchurch. Kaikōura for whale watching and seafood; Christchurch for the garden city and its post-quake rebuild.
Days 8–9: Aoraki / Mount Cook. Drive inland via Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki; walk the Hooker Valley Track; stargaze.
Days 10–11: Queenstown / Wanaka. Adventure activities, lake scenery, Central Otago wine. Milford Sound is a full-day trip from Queenstown — long day, big payoff.
Days 12–13: Franz Josef. West Coast glaciers; heli-hike if the budget allows.
Day 14: Abel Tasman. Finish with golden beaches — kayak or water-taxi the coast. Fly out of Nelson, or loop back.
This is already a full two weeks. With only 10 days, cut Abel Tasman or the West Coast glaciers; with 7, stick to one island.
Driving in NZ: what newcomers get wrong
Distances deceive: Auckland to Wellington is a full day's drive; Queenstown to Milford Sound and back is another.
Roads are narrow, winding and often single-lane bridges — average speeds are far below what the map suggests.
NZ drives on the left. You may drive on a valid overseas licence for up to 12 months from arrival.
Check highway conditions on the NZTA Journey Planner before long drives, especially in winter when South Island passes can close.
Campervan vs car + motels
Campervan (e.g. JUCY, Britz): bed and transport in one; freedom camping is restricted, so use holiday parks and DOC campsites. Best for flexible, slow itineraries.
Car + motels: NZ's motel network is excellent and often cheaper than a campervan once you add campsite fees — check current prices. Best for fixed itineraries and winter travel (heated rooms beat a cold van).
Frequently asked questions
Is 10 days enough for both islands?
It's the absolute minimum and it will feel rushed. Fourteen days is comfortable; three weeks is ideal.
When should I book the ferry, Milford cruise and Hobbiton?
As early as you can for December–February travel — all three sell out.
Can I do this route by bus instead of driving?
InterCity coaches cover the main towns, but you'll lose flexibility for the scenic detours that make the trip. The route really assumes a vehicle.
