The short answer
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first UK trip: three days in London, one day trip to Bath (with Stonehenge as an option), and two days in Edinburgh — all connected by train, no car needed. Day 7 is a flex day with two choices depending on where you end up.
Before you go: the logistics
Trains. Book advance tickets on National Rail as early as you can — London to Edinburgh (about 4.5 hours, LNER from King's Cross) and London to Bath (about 1 hour 20, GWR from Paddington) both get much cheaper bought ahead. A Railcard pays for itself on one long journey if you're eligible.
London transport. Use contactless (bank card or phone) on the Tube and buses — daily and weekly caps apply automatically, no Oyster card needed.
Tickets. Pre-book the Tower of London and Edinburgh Castle with timed entry; both sell out in peak season. The big museums (British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern) are free but worth an online slot booking.
Day 1 — London: arrive and orient
Drop bags, then head to the British Museum (free, 2–3 hours — don't try to see it all). Afternoon: walk Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square, dinner in Soho. Early night — you'll need the energy.
Day 2 — London: the Tower and the river
Tower of London first thing (pre-booked ~9am slot; do the Crown Jewels before the crowds). Allow 3–4 hours. Then walk the South Bank: Shakespeare's Globe (photo stop), Tate Modern (free), across the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's. Evening: Borough Market for dinner.
Day 3 — London: Westminster and the West End
Morning: Westminster — Big Ben and Parliament from the outside (free), Westminster Abbey if you want the paid interior, or the free National Gallery instead. Afternoon: Buckingham Palace (Changing of the Guard on select days — check the schedule), St James's Park, then shopping or a show in the West End.
Day 4 — Day trip: Bath (or Oxford)
Bath (recommended): early train from Paddington (~1h20). Roman Baths with a pre-booked morning slot (~£26.50–29), lunch, then the Royal Crescent, Assembly Rooms, and Pulteney Bridge. Last trains back to London run late — or continue to your next stop.
Oxford (alternative): ~1 hour from Paddington or Marylebone. Christ Church and the Bodleian Library in the morning, punting in the afternoon.
Day 5 — London → Edinburgh
Morning train from King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley (~4.5 hours — book a window seat on the right side for coastal views north of Newcastle). Afternoon: walk the Royal Mile from the castle end down to Holyrood, then up Calton Hill for sunset. Dinner in the Old Town.
Day 6 — Edinburgh: castle and museums
Edinburgh Castle with a pre-booked morning slot (£23.50 online) — 3 hours covers the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Great Hall, and the war memorials. Afternoon: National Museum of Scotland (free, excellent), then Arthur's Seat if your legs are willing (1–2 hours round trip, free).
Day 7 — Flex day: two options
Option A — back in London: day trip to Cambridge (~1 hour from King's Cross): King's College Chapel, punting on the Cam, back by evening.
Option B — stay in Edinburgh: slow morning, Dean Village walk, afternoon at the Scottish National Gallery (free) or a whisky tasting on the Royal Mile.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for the UK?
For the greatest-hits route (London, Bath, Edinburgh) — yes. You won't see the Lake District, the Cotswolds, or the Highlands; those each deserve their own trip.
What's the cheapest way between London and Edinburgh?
Advance train tickets booked weeks ahead are usually cheapest and city-centre to city-centre. Budget flights from London airports can be cheaper but add airport time at both ends.
Can I do Stonehenge and Bath in one day trip?
Yes, but it's long: train to Salisbury, bus to Stonehenge, then on to Bath. Most people prefer Bath alone as a relaxed day and Stonehenge as a separate half-day.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not for this itinerary — every stop is on the rail network and walkable. Rent one only if you add the Lake District or the Cotswolds.
Should I start in London or Edinburgh?
London first works best: more flight options into Heathrow, and the itinerary builds from busy (London) to relaxed (Edinburgh).
