The short answer
Rio for the icons, Iguaçu for the falls, Salvador for the culture, then the dunes or the Amazon for the wild — and São Paulo to close. This is the route logic that works for a first two-week trip; distances do the rest of the deciding.

Days 1–4: Rio de Janeiro
Day 1: Cristo Redentor in the morning (clearest skies), Santa Teresa and Lapa in the afternoon. Day 2: Sugarloaf at sunset, Copacabana promenade. Day 3: Beach day — Ipanema or Copacabana — plus the Selarón Steps and the cathedral. Day 4: Slow morning, then a late-afternoon flight to Foz do Iguaçu (about 2 hours; book an evening flight so you don't lose a day).
Days 5–6: Iguaçu Falls
Day 5 (Brazilian side): The park at Foz do Iguaçu is a half-day of panoramic walkways ending at the Devil's Throat. Optional: the Macuco boat safari into the falls' spray in the afternoon.
Day 6 (Argentine side): Cross to Puerto Iguazú (check current border/visa formalities for your nationality — most visitors cross same-day without issue). The Argentine park's walkways run above the falls and take a full day; the Ecological Train and the Devil's Throat catwalk are the highlights.
Days 7–9: Salvador
Fly Iguaçu → Salvador (usually via São Paulo or Rio; 4–6 hours total — there is rarely a direct flight, so book the shortest connection). Day 7: Pelourinho old town — churches, museums, capoeira. Day 8: Elevador Lacerda, Mercado Modelo, then Porto da Barra beach at sunset. Day 9: Day trip to the island of Itaparica, or a slower Pelourinho day with a cooking class.
Days 10–12: Lençóis Maranhenses or the Amazon
Option A — Lençóis Maranhenses (dunes): Fly Salvador → São Luís (about 2 hours). Transfer to Barreirinhas (3–4 hours by road). Two full days of lagoon tours (Lagoa Azul, Lagoa Bonita circuits) plus a Preguiças river boat trip.
Option B — the Amazon: Fly Salvador → Manaus (usually via Brasília or São Paulo; long day). Two to three nights at a jungle lodge — wildlife walks, canoe trips, the Meeting of the Waters. Book the lodge first; lodges arrange the transfers.
Pick the dunes if you travel May–September (lagoons full); pick the Amazon if you want wildlife and don't mind heat and mosquitoes year-round.
Days 13–14: São Paulo
Fly back via São Luís or Manaus → São Paulo (GRU or Congonhas). Day 13: Avenida Paulista, MASP museum, Ibirapuera Park. Day 14: Mercado Municipal for lunch, Liberdade (the Japanese district), last-minute shopping — then your international flight home from GRU.
Transport rules of thumb
Fly between regions, always. Rio–Iguaçu, Iguaçu–Salvador, Salvador–São Luís/Manaus are all 2–6 hour flights; the same legs are 20–40 hours by bus. Brazil's three big domestic carriers — LATAM, GOL, and Azul — cover the network.
Book domestic flights 2–3 months ahead for the best fares; last-minute prices on tourist corridors (Rio–Iguaçu, São Paulo–Salvador) spike hard.
Iguaçu → Salvador has no reliable direct flight — accept a connection via São Paulo (GRU) or Rio (GIG) and pick the shortest layover.
Border crossing at Iguaçu: keep your passport and entry card handy; the crossing is routine, but queues can be long on weekends.
Internal transfers (airport → Barreirinhas, Manaus → lodge) are usually arranged by your tour operator or lodge — confirm before you book the flight.
Practical notes
Ticket prices and hours change frequently at parks and museums — check official sites when you lock in dates, and reserve timed entries (Cristo Redentor, Iguaçu) online ahead.
One region per 2–3 days is the sustainable pace. Cutting Salvador or Iguaçu to a single day just to "fit it all in" is the classic first-timer mistake.
Pack for three climates: beach heat in Rio/Salvador, spray and humidity at Iguaçu, and — for Lençóis or the Amazon — strong sun, sand, and insects.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do this route in 10 days?
Yes, by trimming São Paulo to 1 day and choosing only one of Lençóis/Amazon with 2 nights. But 14 days is the version where you actually rest.
Is it safe to travel between cities at night?
Stick to flights. Overnight buses on the safe corridors exist, but for a first trip the time savings of flying are worth it.
Should I rent a car?
Not for this route — cities have ride-hailing and tours handle the rest. A car only pays off for a dedicated Chapada Diamantina or south-Brazil road trip.
