The short answer
New Zealand's immigration rules are precise, and small mistakes have large consequences. These are the five traps that catch the most people.
1. The AEWV chains you to one employer
Your Accredited Employer Work Visa is tied to a specific employer, occupation, and location. Lose the job and you can lose the right to stay. Before signing, confirm the employer's accreditation — and know that changing employers generally means a new Job Check and a new visa application.
2. Six SMC points is a threshold, not a ranking
Reaching 6 points makes you eligible for the Skilled Migrant Category — but you must still submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and be invited to apply. Points alone do not grant residence.
3. Only licensed advisers — unlicensed advice is illegal
In New Zealand, immigration advice may only be given by licensed immigration advisers or lawyers. Unlicensed advice is illegal, and bad advice from an unlicensed agent has derailed real applications. Verify any adviser on the official register before you pay.
4. Working outside your visa conditions can end everything
Visa conditions matter. Working when your visa does not allow it — or in a different role, for a different employer, or in a different location than your AEWV permits — can lead to deportation liability. Read your visa conditions line by line.
5. Timing: apply before your current visa expires
An expired visa means unlawful status, which damages future applications. Start your renewal or your next-step application early, and keep English test results, medical certificates, and police certificates within their validity windows.
Frequently asked questions
My employer says they will "sort out the visa" — is that enough?
No. The employer handles accreditation and the Job Check; you apply for the visa yourself and must personally meet the worker requirements (experience or qualification, plus English for ANZSCO level 3–5 jobs).
I lost my AEWV job. What now?
Act fast: find a new accredited employer willing to run a Job Check, and apply for a new AEWV. Do not keep working for the old employer or start work for the new one until the new visa is granted.
A consultant promised me a guaranteed visa. Should I trust them?
No one can guarantee an INZ decision. Guaranteed outcomes are a classic red flag — walk away and use a licensed adviser instead.
