The short answer

The MTR is one of the world's best metro systems — clean, frequent, and covering almost everywhere you'll ever need to go. But the fare system has layers: passes, discounts, and a separate Airport Express. Here's the full picture.

How fares work

MTR fares are distance-based: tap in with Octopus, tap out, and the fare deducts automatically. Typical urban trips cost roughly HK$4–13 in 2026. Good news: MTR fares are frozen for 2026/27 — no increase this year.

Payment options at the gate:

  • Octopus (physical or phone) — the standard; slightly cheaper than single-journey tickets.
  • Contactless bank cards (Visa/Mastercard) — accepted at gates, same fare as Octopus.
  • Single-journey tickets — from machines; fine occasionally, but Octopus is cheaper and faster.

The Monthly Pass (全月通): for daily commuters

If you ride the same route every workday, the Monthly Pass pays for itself. Five passes cover the major commuter corridors:

PassRoutePrice (2026)
Monthly Pass 1Sheung Shui / Wu Kai Sha – East Tsim Sha TsuiHK$425
Monthly Pass 2Tuen Mun – Nam CheongHK$425
Monthly Pass 3Tuen Mun – Hung HomHK$535
Monthly Pass 4Tung Chung – Nam Cheong(see MTR site)
Monthly Pass 5Tung Chung – Hong Kong(see MTR site)

Each gives unlimited rides between the designated stations for the calendar month, plus 25% off connecting journeys beyond them. Buy at MTR Customer Service Centres and load onto your Octopus. Rule of thumb: if your daily round trip costs more than ~HK$20, a pass likely wins — do the math on your route.

Airport Express (separate system!)

The Airport Express is NOT part of the regular MTR fare system. From the airport:

DestinationOctopus fareSmart TicketTime
Hong Kong Station (Central)HK$120HK$130~24 min
Kowloon StationHK$105HK$115~22 min
Tsing Yi StationHK$73HK$80~14 min

Money-saving tricks:

  • Same-day return is free — tap in and out with the same Octopus/card and come back before midnight, the return leg costs nothing.
  • The taxi interchange offer (from Sept 2026): show a same-day taxi receipt of HK$50+ at the station for 50% off the Octopus fare.
  • Cheaper alternative: the A21 / A22 airport buses (~HK$35–40) — slower but a fraction of the price.

Discounts to know

  • Early Bird Discount — tap in before 7:15am on weekdays for a discount (check current terms on the MTR site).
  • Fare Saver — selected stations give a small discount when you tap a reader before entering.
  • Tourist Day Pass — HK$75 for one day of unlimited MTR/Light Rail/MTR Bus (not Airport Express); for visitors staying under 14 days.
  • Student Status Octopus — big concessions for full-time students; apply through your school.

Etiquette (unwritten rules, strictly enforced by glares)

  • Stand on the right on escalators. The left is for walking. This is sacred.
  • Let passengers off first. Stand to the sides of the doors.
  • No eating or drinking — it's actually a bylaw offence (HK$2,000 fine), and locals will not hesitate to shame you.
  • Priority seats are genuinely respected — don't sit in them during busy times.
  • Backpacks off in crowded cars; move into the middle of the carriage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MTR 24 hours?

No — roughly 6am to 1am. After that, night buses (N-prefixed routes) and red minibuses take over.

What's the Light Rail?

In the Northwest New Territories (Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai), the Light Rail is a tram-like system integrated with Octopus — tap on the platform before boarding.

Can I bring luggage on the MTR?

Yes, but during rush hour you'll be unpopular. The Airport Express has dedicated luggage racks.
