The short answer

China's only tropical island province, Hainan is the country's classic sun-and-sea escape — often called the "Hawaii of China." Beyond the resort beaches, the island packs in a giant sea Guanyin statue, a mountaintop rainforest park, China's only coastal space-launch site, and thousand-year-old fishing towns. Fly into Sanya for beaches or Haikou for culture, and allow 5-7 days for a proper loop.

Sanya: Beaches and Iconic Sights

  • Yalong Bay (亚龙湾) — "The No.1 Bay Under Heaven," Sanya's finest beach: 7km of white sand and clear water, lined with luxury resorts; the nearby Tropical Paradise Forest Park offers rainforest trails, a suspension bridge and panoramic ocean views.
  • Tianya Haijiao (天涯海角) — "The End of the Sky and the Corner of the Sea," the famous headland with the inscribed Tianya and Haijiao rocks and the Southern Sky Pillar; a must-visit for couples and the classic Sanya photo stop.
  • Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone (南山文化旅游区) — A Buddhist-themed coastal park centered on the 108-meter-tall Guanyin statue standing in the sea, with Nanshan Temple, vegetarian restaurants and sea-view gardens.
  • Daxiao Dongtian (大小洞天) — A 800-year-old Taoist "grotto-heaven" scenic area where strange cliffs and hidden caves meet the sea, known for its longevity culture and the classic "small cave heaven" stone inscriptions.
  • Sanya Bay & Coconut Dream Corridor (三亚湾/椰梦长廊) — A 20km seaside promenade lined with coconut palms along Sanya Bay, the best free sunset spot in the city with BBQ stalls and street music at night.

Haikou: Old Streets and City Green

  • Qilou Old Street (骑楼老街) — Haikou's historic arcade-house quarter, with South-Asian-influenced colonial buildings from the 19th-20th centuries now housing cafes, craft shops and Hainan snacks.
  • Haikou Bell Tower (海口钟楼) — The restored landmark clock tower by the harbor, rebuilt in the 1980s on the site of the 1920s original; a good photo stop combined with the nearby seaside walk.
  • Wanlv Garden (万绿园) — Haikou's largest central park, a vast lawn dotted with thousands of coconut palms facing Haikou Bay — popular for picnics, kite-flying and evening strolls.
  • Holiday Beach (假日海滩) — Haikou's main public beach west of the city, with soft sand, water sports and the famous "sunset over the sea" views; less crowded than Sanya's beaches.

Baoting & Lingshui: Rainforest and Islands

  • Yanoda Rainforest (呀诺达雨林), Baoting — A 5A-rated tropical rainforest park about 35km from Sanya, with hanging bridges, waterfalls, a glass viewing platform and Li ethnic culture performances; noticeably cooler than the coast.
  • Wuzhizhou Island (蜈支洲岛), Sanya — Off Haitang Bay, "China's first diving base" with coral reefs, crystal-clear water and full water sports (snorkeling, jet skis, parasailing); take the boat early to beat the crowds.
  • Fenjiezhou Island (分界洲岛), Lingshui — A 5A island-type scenic area straddling the climatic dividing line of the island, known for diving, a marine animal area, and the romantic "sleeping Buddha" island silhouette; a quieter alternative to Wuzhizhou.
  • Nanwan Monkey Island (南湾猴岛), Lingshui — China's only island-type macaque nature reserve, home to over 2,000 macaques; reach it by China's longest over-water cable car, with views of the Tanka fishing rafts below.

Wenchang: Space Launches and Coconut Groves

  • Wenchang Space Launch Site & Science Center (文昌航天发射场/航天科普中心) — China's first open coastal launch base (home of the Long March 5 rockets); the science center and viewing areas let you learn about the space program, and timed visits can coincide with real launches.
  • Tongguling (铜鼓岭) — The "No.1 Peak of Eastern Hainan," a 338-meter coastal mountain with hiking trails to a summit overlooking Moon Bay and the launch site; great for sunrise.
  • Dongjiao Coconut Grove (东郊椰林) — One of China's largest coastal coconut groves, with tens of thousands of coconut palms along a quiet beach — the classic "coconut wind and sea charm" of Hainan, free to enter.
  • Moon Bay (月亮湾) — A crescent-shaped bay with fine white sand near Tongguling, good for swimming and water sports, quieter than Sanya's beaches.
  • Soong Family Ancestral Home (宋氏祖居) — The ancestral home of Soong Ching-ling's family in Wenchang, a well-preserved traditional residence complex and an important site of overseas-Chinese history.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: November to April — dry, sunny and warm (20-26°C) while the rest of China freezes; May-October is hot, humid and typhoon-prone, but cheaper.
  • Getting there: Fly into Sanya Phoenix Airport or Haikou Meilan Airport; the island high-speed rail loops around the coast connecting Haikou, Wenchang, Lingshui and Sanya.
  • Getting around: The high-speed rail is the easiest way between cities. In Sanya, buses and ride-hailing cover the bays; day tours run to Yanoda, the islands and Nanshan. For Wenchang's launch site and Tongguling, renting a car or joining a local tour from Haikou (1.5 hours) is most convenient.

Frequently asked questions

Q: When is the best time to visit Hainan?

A: November to March for guaranteed beach weather — it's China's top winter escape. If you want fewer crowds and lower prices, late April to June works, but avoid July-September typhoon season.

Q: Wuzhizhou Island vs Fenjiezhou Island — which to choose?

A: Wuzhizhou (near Sanya) has the best diving and water sports but bigger crowds; Fenjiezhou (Lingshui) is quieter, also good for diving, and easier to fit into an east-coast route. Pick one — both take a full day.
