Guerrero Attractions Guide
Guerrero is Mexico's Pacific playground — Acapulco's cliff divers, Taxco's silver, and the laid-back surf towns of the Costa Grande. It's also one of Mexico's most historically rich states. Stick to the established tourist corridors, travel by day, and you'll find warm water, great food, and genuine hospitality.
Acapulco
The original Mexican resort, glamorous since the 1950s — and still delivering sunsets.
- La Quebrada — the legendary cliff divers plunging 35 meters into the surf; shows at 1pm and evening (the night dive with torches is unforgettable).
- Fuerte de San Diego — the star-shaped 18th-century fort, now the Acapulco History Museum.
- Playa Condesa & Playa Icacos — the main beach strip with parasailing, jet skis, and beach clubs.
- Isla de La Roqueta — the island across the bay: snorkeling, a small zoo, and the underwater Virgin of Guadalupe statue.
- Pie de la Cuesta — the sunset beach northwest of town, famous for its spectacular dusk skies.
- Zócalo & Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad — the old town square and its blue-domed cathedral.
Taxco
The silver capital — a vertiginous whitewashed town in the mountains, and one of Mexico's most beautiful.
- Parroquia de Santa Prisca — the pink-stone baroque masterpiece that dominates the main square; among Mexico's finest churches.
- Silver shopping — hundreds of workshops and shops; Taxco silver is a national institution. Buy from established stores and check for the .925 stamp.
- Museo de la Platería (William Spratling Museum) — the silver museum honoring the American who revived Taxco's craft.
- Mina Prehispánica de Chontalcoatlán — tour a pre-Hispanic mine right under the town.
- Teleférico (cable car) — ride up to the Hotel Monte Taxco viewpoint for the classic panorama.
- Mercado de Tetitlán — the market for jumiles (edible stink bugs, a local delicacy) and pozole.
Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo
The planned resort and the fishing village, side by side on the Costa Grande.
- Zihuatanejo bay — the working fishing town with a gorgeous bay; seafood restaurants line the waterfront.
- Playa La Ropa — Zihua's best swimming beach, calm and lined with palapa restaurants.
- Playa Las Gatas — reachable by water taxi; snorkeling around the man-made reef.
- Ixtapa's beaches — Playa El Palmar's long surf beach and the quieter Playa Linda.
- Isla Ixtapa — the island off Playa Linda with snorkeling and beach restaurants.
- Sport fishing — Zihuatanejo is a major sailfish destination; charters leave from the municipal pier.
Chilpancingo & the Interior
- Chilpancingo — the state capital: Museo Regional de Guerrero and the murals of the Palacio de Gobierno.
- Grutas de Cacahuamilpa — one of the world's great cave systems, 2 km of illuminated galleries with cathedral-sized chambers (near Taxco).
- Pozas Azules (Atzala) — the turquoise natural pools, a popular swimming spot near Taxco.
- Iguala — where the Plan of Iguala was signed; the Museo de la Bandera (flag museum) is worth a stop.
- Pilcaya — the "flower greenhouse of Mexico" and gateway to more caves.
Practical Tips
Best season: November–April is dry, sunny, and perfect — peak season. May–October is hot and rainy (hurricane season); prices drop but some days get washed out. Taxco is pleasant year-round thanks to its mountain altitude.
Getting around: Buses from CDMX (Taxqueña) to Acapulco (5–6 hours, first-class with movies) and Taxco (3 hours) are frequent and comfortable. Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is a 7–8 hour bus ride or a short flight from CDMX. Travel between tourist towns by day; within Acapulco use hotel taxis or ride-hailing.
