The short answer

Guangxi is the home of China's most famous karst landscape — the saying goes "Guilin's scenery is the finest under heaven" (桂林山水甲天下). But the region is much more than the Li River: Longsheng's terraced rice fields, the transnational Detian Waterfall on the Vietnam border, Beihai's volcanic island and beaches, and thousand-year-old riverside towns all deserve a place on the itinerary. Plan 5-8 days, more if you add the coast.

Guilin: The Li River and City Landmarks

  • Li River Cruise (漓江游船) — The classic 4-5 hour cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (or the shorter Yangdi-Xingping bamboo-raft section) through karst peaks, water buffalo and fishing villages — the postcard scenery of China.
  • Xingping Ancient Town & Nine-Horse Fresco Hill (兴坪古镇/九马画山) — Xingping is the old riverside town on the most scenic stretch of the Li River; nearby Nine-Horse Fresco Hill is the famous cliff face where you can count horse-shaped patterns, also the scene on the 20-yuan banknote at Yellow Cloth Shoal.
  • Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山) — Guilin's city symbol, a karst hill shaped like an elephant drinking from the Li River, with the Moon-in-the-Water cave arch and the Ming-era Puxian Pagoda on top.
  • Two Rivers and Four Lakes (两江四湖) — The night cruise through Guilin's central waterway system (Li River, Taohua River and four lakes), passing illuminated bridges, pagodas and the Sun-Moon twin pagodas.

Yangshuo: Countryside and the Yulong River

  • West Street (阳朔西街) — Yangshuo's 1,400-year-old "foreigners' street," a lively pedestrian lane of cafes, bars and souvenir shops that comes alive at night.
  • Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊) — A scenic 10-kilometer cycling route through the Yangshuo countryside past karst peaks with names like Moon Hill, with bike and e-bike rentals everywhere.
  • Yulong River Bamboo Rafting (遇龙河竹筏) — A gentler, quieter alternative to the Li River: drift down the clear Yulong River on a bamboo raft, sliding over small weirs between green hills and farmland.
  • Yinziyan Karst Cave (银子岩) — "Like traveling in a silver palace" — a large illuminated limestone cave in Lipu between Guilin and Yangshuo, known for its crystal-like stalactites.
  • Impression Liu Sanjie (印象刘三姐) — Zhang Yimou's famous large-scale outdoor show staged on the Li River itself, with hundreds of performers, fishing-lamp lights and karst peaks as the backdrop.

Longsheng: The Longji Rice Terraces

  • Ping'an Village (平安寨) — The classic Longji viewpoint cluster: hike up to the Nine Dragons and Five Tigers or Seven Stars Around the Moon lookouts for sweeping views of the terraced "dragon's backbone."
  • Jinkeng / Dazhai Village (金坑大寨) — The largest and most dramatic terrace area, with the Golden Buddha Summit viewpoint reachable by cable car and the West Hill Music viewpoint for sunrises.
  • Guzhuang Village (古壮寨) — The "ancient Zhuang village," a quieter, less-visited terrace area with traditional Zhuang wooden houses and strong ethnic character.
  • Huangluo Yao Village (黄洛瑶寨) — The famous "long-hair village" of the Red Yao people, where women keep hair over a meter long; known for long-hair performances and hair-care culture displays.

Southern Guangxi: Border Waterfalls, Beaches and Ancient Towns

  • Detian Transnational Waterfall (德天跨国瀑布), Chongzuo — Asia's largest transnational waterfall (over 200m wide, 70m drop in three tiers), shared with Vietnam's Ban Gioc Falls across the Guichun River; most spectacular in the rainy season (June-September).
  • Silver Beach (北海银滩), Beihai — Beihai's famous white-sand beach, named for its glittering quartz sand, with calm shallow water good for swimming and sunset walks.
  • Weizhou Island (涠洲岛) — China's youngest volcanic island, a 1.5-hour ferry from Beihai, with the Crocodile Mountain Volcanic Park's basalt cliffs and sea caves, the 19th-century coral-stone Catholic church, and Dishui Danping's sea-eroded rock formations.
  • Huangyao Ancient Town (黄姚古镇), Hezhou — A thousand-year-old riverside town named after the Huang and Yao families, with 300+ Ming-Qing stone houses, covered bridges and the Dragon Bridge; quieter and less commercialized than better-known ancient towns.

Practical Tips

  • Best season: April to October for the Li River (misty spring and lush green summer); September-October is golden season for the Longji terraces (harvest) and also good beach weather in Beihai. Avoid the cold damp winter months for the terraces.
  • Getting there: Fly into Guilin Liangjiang Airport; high-speed trains connect Guilin with Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Nanning. Nanning is the gateway for Detian and Beihai.
  • Getting around: Li River cruises depart from Zhujiang or Mopanshan piers; buses and tour shuttles run from Guilin to Longsheng (2.5-3 hours). Detian is 4-5 hours by bus from Nanning via Chongzuo, or a full-day tour. Weizhou Island ferries leave from Beihai International Passenger Port (book ahead in peak season).

Frequently asked questions

Q: Should I take the full Li River cruise or the shorter raft trip?

A: The full 4-star cruise (Guilin to Yangshuo, ~4-5 hours) is the classic experience. If you're short on time, the 1.5-hour Yangdi-to-Xingping bamboo raft covers the most beautiful section, including Nine-Horse Fresco Hill and the 20-yuan banknote view.

Q: Which Longji terrace village should I choose?

A: Ping'an is best for a half-day trip with classic viewpoints; Jinkeng (Dazhai) is bigger and better for an overnight stay with cable-car access and sunrise views. Huangluo adds Yao ethnic culture on the way in.
